Igby Slocumb from Burr Steers’ movie Igby Goes Down and Holden Caulfield from J. D. Salinger’s award winning novel The Catcher in the Rye are both troubled adolescences from events that occurred in their yesteryear. These two teens both have a instance of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. but show much different symptoms. which are evident to those around them. These symptoms are portrayed in different incidents throughout both the movie and the novel. when Holden invariably remembers his brother. when Igby can non manage his mother’s decease. and Igby’s steady fright of going like his supposed-to-be male parent. Holden’s chief ground for holding symptoms of PTSD is the tragic decease of his younger brother Allie. who had died of Leukemia when he was eleven. One of Holden’s obvious symptoms is his reoccurring memories of his asleep brother. When Stradlater requested that Holden compose a composing for English category for him. he decided to compose about his brother Allie’s baseball baseball mitt. As he begins composing. it brings memories back to him. He says “He’s dead now. He got Leukemia and died when we were up in Maine. on July 18th. 1946. You’d have liked him” ( Salinger. Page 38 ) .

This citation indicates how Holden remembers his brother’s decease in item. and it is proof that he has reoccurring memories of the traumatic event of Allie’s decease. Another symptom of PTSD that Holden shows is his fury tantrum shortly following his brother’s decease. “I slept in the garage the dark he died. and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist. merely for the snake pit of it. I even tried to interrupt all the Windowss on the station waggon we had that summer. but my manus was already broken and everything by that clip. and I couldn’t do it” ( Salinger. Page 39 ) . This quotation mark shows how angered and disturbed Holden was that dark by stating us how violently he reacted. Holden’s instance of PTSD apparent is most likely to be caused by Allie’s decease shown by these points. Igby Slocumb has a status similar to that of Holden’s. but Igby’s is caused by his father’s mental interruption down. Igby has a reoccurring memory of his male parent when he recites his words from the clip that Jason was in the shower to the full clothed and shed blooding from interrupting the glass.

“I experience a great force per unit area coming down on me. It’s oppressing me. It’s merely you and me. old man” are the words said by Jason that Igby repeated to himself. Igby’s memory disturbed him in his immature age at the clip his male parent said it. and from that Igby grew a changeless emphasis about perchance going what Jason was. and is a ground that Igby has a instance of PTSD. Early on in the movie. we discover that Igby turns to drugs to seek to get away the world he is populating in. We see this when he is in the washroom of the hotel room and he’s pickings miscellaneous pills as a agency of acquiring high. At the same clip he calls a sex line non for pleasance. but merely looking for person to speak to. Much like when Holden merely wanted to speak to the cocotte he was with alternatively of making anything sexual. To both characters. merely speaking provided much more relief than that of sexual ideas or actions would hold to either of them.

Igby’s father’s metal interrupt down is one of the causes of the teen’s PTSD instance. Igby’s mother’s decease was besides one of the subscribers Igby’s Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Shortly after the Slocumb’s female parent becomes deceased. Igby realizes that she is really gone. Igby does non believe she is really dead so he jumps on here and efforts to crush the cadaver so she will wake up from what he wants to believe is sleep. This indicates that Igby’s female parent death was traumatic to Igby and caused him to flog out and shout whilst seeking to resuscitate his female parent. After the event. Igby was cranky and seemed really nervous to Ollie and Sookie.

Merely earlier Mimi died. she told Igby that DH was his existent male parent. After Igby got over his mother’s decease. he was eventually able to be relieved of his changeless emphasis because he knew he could non inherit his Jason’s mental status. most likely schizophrenic disorder. Mimi’s decease was traumatic for Igby. but afterwards it brought him a sense of security that he would non hold to cover with developing the status that Jason had. Overall.
