The world has been evolving year by year and the growth of different environmental problems has become threats for the society. Pollution and other conflicts created by people for the environment have resulted to finding alternative ways to maximize the potential energy that the world can produce. This changing world somehow needs a changing perspective with regards to alternative renewable energy resources.
Is it necessary to use Alternative Renewable Energy Resources? Should the use of alternative energy sources to be implemented to alleviate reliance to fossil fuels and to protect the environment?
ALTERNATIVE RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES
1.) Alternative renewable energy resources is a strategic solution to protect the environment from degradation.
Since the worldwide recognition of global warming, the world focuses their attention to alternative energy sources to address the global climate change brought about by carbon emissions. Countries start to develop alternative energy resources focused on renewable energies without so much reliance on fossil fuels. They try to find innovative ways to use and conserve energy sources that protect our environment. The impacts of energy sourcing to the environment brought about by the carbon emissions are: a. pollution and b. environmental degradation.
The world needs to find strategic solutions to meet the growing demand for energy and secure future energy for the next generations. Aside from innovative ways to protect and improve the environment, the world needs to educate the communities on how to protect and conserve the environment.
Solutions should include:
– Creating a national policy to reduce carbon emissions across the globe
– Development of an alternative renewable energy resource technology that will result to the reduction of carbon emissions.
– Expansion of energy-efficiency programs.
– Encourage investment in alternative renewable energy resources and investing on state of the art power plants.
A good energy policy will help diversify domestic energy supplies. Renewable energy coming from natural sources such as those harnessed from the sun, wind, biomass and geothermal heat will provide for our future demand for energy. The advanced technology and careful planning will ensure harnessing these renewable resources effectively. With these solutions, the environment can be easily protected and somehow be secured. The reduction of pollution is already one effective answer added with these alternatives.
2.) The development of renewable energy can provide for a stable price of energy that can also be income generating.
Although the current renewable and alternative energy resources’ contribution to the total electricity supply in America is still considerably small at only 9%. Those sectors on renewable and alternative energy resources are considered the fastest growing in the United States and continue to encourage a diverse portfolio at domestic energy supplies. In fact, even if the non-hydro-power electricity needs are only 2% in the United States, the generation of electricity from these sources of hydro-power renewable energy grew by 30% in the 1990s. The increasing supply of renewable energy is vital to the delivery of supplying clean and natural domestic power needed by the United States economy.
As natural resources are being tapped to produce electricity, fuel and heat, the end result is a less adverse environmental impact. These sources are nondepletable and are abundant than conventional sources. One example is hydro-power generated from four sources: geothermal, biomass, wind and solar. It is a significant contribution of energy supply in the United States and now is competitive with other forms of conventional electricity. The United States can be a leader in the development of these renewable resources of energy. The development can provide for a stable price of energy and can be income generating for those getting involved like farmers and landowners.
“The solution to most of our national energy and environmental problems requires educating energy consumers to maximize efficiency and productivity… Meeting and surpassing the Kyoto Protocol targets will save fuel costs and should make our industries more efficient and competitive in the global marketplace. The largest hurdle that the United States faces in creating an adequate societal response to global warming is perceiving that we contribute the largest share to the problem and that shaping and advancing the solution is just good business (Mayhew, p. 62, 2002).”
3.) The renewable energy will secure the provision for the future demand for energy.
Alternative Energy Forms according to NREL (2008) include:
1. Hydrogen – used to power cars and provide electricity (e.g. Hydroelectric power)
2. Solar and Photovoltaics – converts sunlight directly into electricity
3. Municipal Solid Waste – used to supply electricity
4. Wood, fires, landfill gas – to supply additional megawatts of electricity (e.g. Energy from refuse and wood -fueled generatos; Nuclear power)
5. Heat recovery – uses industrial waste heat to supply additional megawatts of electricity
6. Biodiesel – fuel can be used to any diesel vehicle with no modifications
7. Wind power – harnessing of energy from wind and converting it into a useful form of energy
There are environmental benefits we get from the alternative renewable energy resources. One, it helps us meet the standards set for the Clean Air Act by helping in providing clean air quality in the environment. The geothermal power saves us from the Carbon Dioxide emissions. The Biopower plants contribute to the reduction of emissions on the air due to its controlled agricultural burning from the agricultural residences, wood waste and landfill gas. Using wind and solar photovoltaics systems in our residences and business would result to the reduction of needing power from polluting fuels. The energy needed to heat up industrial processes can be reduced through solar, thermal and geothermal technology. Geothermal power even requires less land than other forms of fuels. Large scale clean energy can be provided by wind farms. Roofs and other building tops can be used for solar photovoltaics. These answers can be enough for future generations if only we would maximize and utilize it starting now.
It is not as hard to come up with answers regarding the certain subject matter because the growth of awareness and the development and number of references regarding these topics are increasing.
I was affected by the thought that there are so many ways and alternatives to improve life by just utilizing other alternative energy resources. It’s just mind-boggling why not all countries are not trying to study its potential.
