In the article “Diet for a Warm Planet” Julia Whitty proposes a radical concept of the U. S. Cutting its carbon footprint as a whole. She uses first-hand knowledge provided by James Hansen from NASA to back up her supporting evidence and statistics. Whitty’s conceptualizes about putting the US on a diet; in the article, for the most part it is well written. She also states that we need to reduce our CO2 emissions from 385 ppm to 350 ppm. Whitty starts out with the perils of the bar-tailed Godwit’s eight-day migration of 7000 miles as an example of efficiency.
Whitty begins discussing what changes we need to make ranging from subtle changes in reducing our caloric intake, to more long-term lifestyle changes of driving less and buying organic are just a few of her concepts that she proposes. Is all this change too impractical or dramatic for our fast-paced got-to-have it now society? Whitty begins with the bar-tailed Godwit’s as a perfect example of efficiency as they weigh less than a pound but can store enough energy for a non-stop flight from the cost of Alaska to New Zeeland in just eight days.
She uses this as a parallel to our own gluttonous lifestyle, the Godwit it eats nonstop until it is clinically obese. This is the same for approximately 35. 7% of Americans who are clinically obese according to the CDC. gov. In a society where that average American male adult consumes 2,666 calories per day, and the average American female adult consumes 1,877 calories per day with some eating as much as 3770 calories according to the USD the average American should be eating just about 2400 calories a day. The concept of us dieting in order to cut our carbon footprint is preposterous to say the least.
This is in the day in age where America is splitting itself apart with just over a third who is morbidly obese because of the lack of nutritional common sense or an inability to provide nutritionally sound choices. There are those who claim they cannot afford to eat health. Average families of four will only average $543. 00 a month on “SNAP” Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program this equates to approx. $18. 00 a day. To break this down even further this is equal to $4. 50 per person per day or a $1. 50 per meal per person you might ask yourself how one’s family feed themselves on that little money?
It is actually simple you by as cheap as possible, usually consisting of prepackaged foods filled with starches, sodium with some proteins in the form of cheap chicken and bargain cuts of pork added in. In most stores purchasing organic will cost at least double than its counterpart.
The reasoning for the increased cost increase generally contributed to lower yields due to production loss. Ok now that we have the healthy eating part down, let look into healthy living and cutting back and becoming more efficient in our own lifestyle. There is no way that we can become as efficient as the Godwit, but we can start by making subtle lifestyle changes that are not as drastic. This has to begin with the way we think, to start with. We need to start to think greener this is how we utilize our energy consumption at home and in our community. Some say, “Just use less gas” well that is much easier in concept then in practice.
A better way to look at using less gas is to plan accordingly thanks right instead of running to the store for that one package of gum or soda you put it on a shopping list and wait until you can justify the gas usage for that 2-mile trip to the store. A better idea is to walk the 2-mile trip to and from the store; this will make the item oh so worthwhile. There are several small thinks than can be done at home to make the greener this will include replacing light bulbs with CFLs when the old bulb burns out or adding insulation to your water heater or turning it down if you can bear that.
Whitty does have the right general idea for her radical concepts maybe if we can slow down enough and can get a grasp of our way out of control social diets. These changes are already happening here is America. There is a new emphasis on eating healthier and being more environmentally aware. It granted this would be a continuing to reeducate everyone, as with repeating multiple times it will eventually sink in. All these changes are not too impractical or dramatic for our fast-paced got-to-have it now society, in fact; it is becoming even more of a necessity if we want to leave a usable planet for our grandchildren’s children,
