In life, people make many Important decisions that have a substantial Impact on their lives, but picking what we want to do for the rest of our lives, Is a big one. Many careers are similar, but no two are the same. Each Job has Individual and specialized tasks, but this paper will only talk about two; architects and transportation engineers. All engineers essentially do the same thing, but each one is special. Architects and transportation engineers each design and build structures. Architects build structures for people to live and work in while transportation engineers build and seen ways to get from one place to another.
The first architects were the Ancient Egyptians who built the pyramids. 4,000 years ago, Asians began using post and beam construction to make structures more structurally sound. Greeks refined that system and Romans started using concrete. During the renaissance, Baroque. Gregorian, and colonial periods, many other building techniques were developed to further advance the industry (“Architects”). Steel was then introduced in the 19th century and revolutionized architecture. Engineers now use advanced materials to make complex structures.
Transportation engineers weren’t a necessity until 1920 when Garrett Morgan invented the first traffic light. Today, they still continue to study how roadways and transportation influences our everyday life (“Transportation Engineers,” Kansas Career Pipeline). Tuition for both of these careers can be very expensive. Architects’ tuition ranges from $2,000 to $30,000 while transportation engineers range from $6,000 to $30,000 (“Architect”) (“Transportation EngineГњ). The minimum requirement for either career Is a bachelors degree and most take a four or five year program to earn a civil engineering degree.
Civil engineering is offered by over 300 colleges nationwide. 80th jobs require many tasks and or skills. They must be able to follow and give strict orders for both Jobs. They require careful listening, much patience, and they both have to research government regulations on a dally basis Searchlights” “Transportation Engineers,” Chronicle Guidance). Both Jobs have to prepare contract documents for building contractors and prepare operating and maintenance manuals, studies, and reports. Visiting construction sites to review the progress of rejects is another thing you would have to do in either career.
Architects must gather Information related to projects environmental sustainability and also have to integrate engineering elements into unified architectural designs. Architects need to be able to talk to others to convey information effectively. Analyzing needs and product requirements to create a design is another skill an architect must have. Transportation engineers make new transportation routes such as streets, highways, or freeways. They look at problem areas and make new designs to help traffic flow. They make sure new routes comply with rules and are safe.
It’s also their Job to figure out how new routes will affect the environment and the surrounding area they plan to build on. They must ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. Transportation engineers need to be analytical and practical to determine the current and future needs of projects. They have to plan, design, and test different structures or systems of transportation to see what works and what doesn’t. Tofu may be a draw back for someone might be something that makes another person ant that Job.
With architects, you can choose how big of a company, or firm, you apply at. So if you don’t like the big city life, you may want to apply at a smaller firm. Architects mostly work inside but occasionally go to the Job site to check on things. Transportation engineers mainly do their work on site and aren’t in the office as much. Both usually work five, eight hour days in a week, but may have to work overtime to meet deadlines. While both of them make reasonable money, transportation engineers do make more on average, $6,250 more per year.
The average architect in the United States makes about $73,090, while the average transportation engineer makes about $79,340. Job opportunities and openings are increasing for both careers. They expect a 25% increase in Job opportunities for architects and a 19% increase for transportation engineers. Although the increase for transportation engineers isn’t as great as it is for architects, there are still 23,200 more Job openings for transportation engineers than there are for architects. Even though many architects get hired into a firm, about 45% of all architects are self-employed.
Like most Jobs, newcomers to the industry have to start at the bottom of the totem pole, but with experience come a bigger paycheck. Sooner than later, they will be making well over the average annual salary. When thinking about my future and what I want to do with it, it is very stressful. That’s because it plans your future. I think being an architect would be the less stressful of the two careers and that why I would choose it over being a transportation engineer. Architects get more freedom to be creative and express themselves through their designs for buildings and homes.
