Why we give aid PANG Is Australia’s closest neighbor. Despite positive economic growth rates In recent years, Pang’s social Indicators are among the worst In the Salsa Pacific. Approximately 85 per cent of Pang’s mainly rural population is poor and an estimated 18 per cent of people are extremely poor. Many lack access to basic services or transport. Poverty, unemployment and poor governance contribute to serious law and order problems. Improving the lives of poor people and promoting stability are central to Australia’s interests. How we give aid

Australia works with national, provincial and local levels of government In PANG to help them deliver essential services such as health and education to the poorest communities in PANG. Whilst some of our assistance is provided directly to the Government, most of our aid is delivered with the assistance of managing contractors. They help us provide technical assistance, infrastructure and other services, including essential funds to the Government. We also deliver some aid directly through non-government organizations (Nags), and organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank and Aslant Development Bank.

Education The PANG education system faces a range of challenges. These include poor access to schools, low student retention rates and issues in the quality of education. It is often hard for children to go to school, particularly in the rural areas, because of distance from villages to schools, lack of transport, and cost of school fees. There are not enough schools or classrooms to take in all school-aged children, and often the standard of school buildings Is very poor. For those children who do go to school, retention rates are low.

Teacher quality and lack of required teaching and educational materials are ongoing issues. Church-run schools make a huge contribution to education in PANG with more than 50 per cent of elementary and primary schools administered by churches. Economic development PANG Is experiencing Its longest period of economic growth since Independence, largely driven by resource revenues. However, with most of the population living in remote and rural areas and with the country’s challenging geography, economic development is constrained. Improving service delivery and reducing poverty requires a stable macro-economic environment.

In addition transport infrastructure s crucial for Pang’s economic development, as it allows people to get their products to market, and Is needed for the delivery of basic services and access to education. With over 85 per cent of Pang’s population living In rural and remote areas, better roads and highways support economic growth and development, through giving people a means to take their goods to market to earn an income. Australia is focusing its support to the transport sector on the maintenance and rehabilitation of 1 6 national priority roads.

These roads form the backbone of Pang’s road network through which he majority of goods and services are delivered. Improving the law and order situation in PANG is essential to laying the foundations for economic growth and establishing investor confidence. Deterioration of law and order impacts on quality of life, hinders development, erodes investor confidence and disrupts delivery of government services and business. We are supporting Government of PANG-led programs aimed at achieving a Just, safe and secure society for all. The PANG Government has developed an ambitious reform agenda to improve law and Justice outcomes for its people.

Three major programs are helping to enhance the capacity of PANG law and Justice agencies to deliver services, focusing on Pang’s law and Justice sector goals. Some of these are: ; PANG-Australia Law and Justice Partnership (delivered by DAFT) ; PANG-Australia Policing Partnership (delivered by the Australian Federal Police) ; Communities will have improved security with police better trained and better resourced to maintain law and order ; Victims of family and sexual violence will have improved recourse and protection ; Women and men will have improved access to Justice
