Ciani Rice 311-01 DBQ Essay 206 BC and 27 AD was a start of a golden age for China and Rome.The golden age for both of these countries lead to peace,prosperity,and technological advances.This was because Augustus Caesar’s rule, which brought forth Pax Romana or In other words the golden age of Rome.Due to syncretism,Rome had adopted greek-inspired art and attitude.The period of the Han is known as China’s golden age, during this time China was under Confucian rule which allowed everyone to support each other by knowing their role in society.Peace and prosperity not only allowed these empires to grow in territory it also allowed them to develop ideas about technology both Rome and the Han dynasty placed value on water based infrastructure, appreciation for technology, and the government roles that respected it. Water played a huge role in both Empires.In Rome and in the Han technology that helped them conceal and control the water was highly regarded. Han official firmly writes to other officials trying to get a better handling on flood control.(Document 1)Around this time China was having ongoing issues with the yellow river which had its infamous name as “China’s sorrow”. The constant hazard of the yellow river led China to form water based infrastructure that would help control floods. The art of this infrastructure required a lot of care as the government official said in the document.In addition, Frontinus the water commissioner for the city of Rome talks about how Roman aqueducts world is are durable and built to perfection.(Document 7) But, however the words of Frontinus are less accountable because this looked at as him praising his own work or “tooting his own horn”. Nevertheless, it shows Rome’s acceptance of this kind of technology. The Han Dynasty and Rome both appreciated technology and incorporated it into everyday life.Plutarch a high official talks about the dedication that goes into making Roman roads, they were built without one single waver and carried themselves throughout the country.(Document 6).The Romans devotion into making sure the roads were well made and very detailed. Romans found it a necessity to have roads , not only did the roads unite the empire it also help spread things like Christianity.Huan Tan talks about how much technology has advanced, First it was the pestle and mortar then animals then it eventually became water power.(Document 3). With Haun Tan saying this it will make the citizens feel that their technology has gotten way more advanced or the years it might it also convince they to spend more money towards to get more ahead. In History of the Early Han Dynasty it talks about Tu Shih building a water power engine to help spare the common people some labor.(Document 4) It is no surprised that Tu Shih would have such a passion in helping the common people, the government’s relationship with the citizens were like a father and his son, the government protects and teaches while the citizens obey.Both Han and Rome had a apperception for technology because it leads to cultural advances and it also kept the people happy. Rome and Han the government often gave comments about technology with respect implemented in them. Both in Rome and Han the government saw technology as a way to help the people and help ease off a little labor off the common people. Huan Guan talks about how when tools were made by individual families they were well made but now the tools are crude and aren’t as easy to use. (Document 2)Huan as a government official, his job is to “father” the citizens according to the Confucian philosophy, when the citizens complain it is his job to contact other officials and do something about it.Frontinus talks about his adequates that disturbed ways to different parts of the city. In saying this he is saying that he respects the technology it gets the water to the people and other places it needs to be, he even says that his adequates can be compared to famous works of the Greeks saying this would lead to shock value and praise from the citizens or just straight bragging rights.All government officials in these documents respected it technology and used it as a outlet to ease the people. In terms of attitude toward technologies, China and Rome both placed value on water technology, had a great appreciation of technology and often used it to help common people, and the government respected it.Similar to these two classical empires, the Persian Empire also had a positive attitude toward water technology and construction of roadways. The Persians had many intricate and complex water technologies like the qanat, a water management system used for irrigation. The famous Royal Road, an ancient highway created by the Persian king Darius the Great for trade and communication, is similar to Roman and Han road building project.
