Climate Change Introduction and Summary

Climate change has become a huge factor in today’s life but
has been around for centuries. Climate change is a naturally according process
but due to the massive increase of human co2 emission and in general human
activity which is the main focus of this report. climate change has therefore
become a very large environmental issue. As mentioned the main focus of the
report will be finding out the human caused problems and then plausible
solutions to creating a cleaner future, as well as changing the planet for the

Climate change has been a contentious
issue for more than two decades. Climate change is the greenhouse effect, meaning
Greenhouse gases in the upper atmosphere let in short-wave radiation from the
sun. But they absorb the long-wave heat radiation that comes back from the
Earth’s surface, re-radiating it and keeping the planet’s overall temperature under
living conditions. As the concentration of these gases increases, the warming
affect also increases causing the rise of temperature (which is at constant rise).

The main aspect of climate change problems comes from the increase
in temperature which then translates to Ice melting worldwide, especially at
the Earth’s poles. This includes mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West
Antarctica and Greenland, and Arctic sea ice.

species are currently and already have been impacted by rising temperatures.
For example, researcher by Bill Fraser according to BBC has “tracked the
decline of the Adélie penguins on Antarctica, where their numbers have fallen
from 32,000 breeding pairs to 11,000 in 30 years.”

Sea levels are rapidly rising

Animals such as butterflies, foxes, and
alpine are moving more north due to the rapid climate difference.

Again due to certain whether criteria
on certain colder places snowfall, rainfall and are increasing creating a more
extreme environment

Some invasive species are thriving. For example,
spruce bark beetles have boomed in Alaska
thanks to 20 years of warm summers. The insects have chewed up 4 million acres
of spruce trees.

The Greenhouse Affect

greenhouse effect is the process by which radiation from a planet’s atmosphere
warms the planet’s surface to a temperature above what it would be without its
atmosphere. The process is done by Solar energy
radiating back out to space from the Earth’s surface is absorbed by atmospheric
greenhouse gases and re-emitted in all directions.

Solutions and Risks

Mitigation approach

The mitigation approach is to permanently eliminate or reduce the long-term risk
and hazards of climate change to human life, property. Mitigation therefore has
to work to get rid of the problem of the rise in temperature rather than avoid

Ex. Logging, mining and the rapidly growing oil palm industry are
killing off the forests of Indonesia causing 80 percent of Indonesia’s carbon
emissions. There fore to help prevent this Indonesia is now
working to develop a unique nationwide program that will use forest
conservation to directly lower its carbon emissions and combat climate change, while also protecting biodiversity and improving the
livelihoods of local communities. Meaning with applying laws to prevent
deforestation and the release of carbon emissions, Indonesia is preventing the
problem of their large carbon emissions making this a mitigation approach

Reducing sources of these gases

Enhancing the “sinks” that accumulate and store these gases

Adaptation approach

The Adaption
approach is to adjust to climate change (including climate variability and
extremes) “to moderate potential damage, to take advantage of opportunities, or
to cope with the consequences” (

Ex. An example of an adaptation approach would be with building
water barriers. These barriers permanently prevent the issue caused by climate
change, which is the rise of water levels, but they do not remove the problem,
as the water levels still rose but were coped with adaptation. “FEMA Flood
Barriers, near Oakland California, offer permanent water control and protection
for residential homes and commercial businesses.”

Making the most of any potential beneficial opportunities

Political Awareness

Even though global warming has been a very know thing for
years, many political figures choose to dismiss it. The reason for this is
because these political figures and large companies are largely profiting form
the extraction of oil, coal and other fossil fuels therefore dismissing the
facts of global warming would allow them to keep on extracting and furthering
their profits without the need of any restrictions.

With the negative side of certain politicians, the government
and politics are definitely the largest factor in preventing or adapting to
climate change.

Multiple governments set out certain registrations and laws
for the better of the climate:

a clean energy economy by investing in efficient energy technologies,
industries, and approaches such as filters or the use of wind meals

 Reduce tropical deforestation and its
associated global warming emissions. (example being the one previously

limits on the amount of carbon that polluters are allowed to emit.

Monitoring Climate Change

In order to keep dated knowledge on
climate change multiple companies insure in monitoring it in multiple ways.
Companies such as, NASA, ESA, NOAA and much more.

On way NASA and ESA monitor climate change is through Their
satellites. This particular climate change monitoring system includes satellite
oserving from above. “ground-based data and forecast models to monitor and
forecast changes in the weather and climate. A historical record of spot
measurements is built up over time, which provides the data to enable
statistical analysis and the identification of mean values, trends and
variations.”  (WikiClimateTech). The
better the depictions of the drones, the more data can be collected about
further climate change.

In other instances, companies like NOAA also monitor global
warming, but mainly with co2 emission, since this can be done without
satellites. Since 2004 their researchers in NOAA’s Global Monitoring Division
have released the “Annual Greenhouse Gas Index” to compare the total warming changes
of heat-trapping gases each year to their first monitoring in  1990.
