As you graduate high school and begin your first year of college you realize that things are a lot different. In high school your classes are mainly based off of what credits you need to graduate, but in college you choose what classes you want to take and when you would like to take them. College is also a bigger expense than high school. You have to pay for all your books, tuition, and even room and board. Lastly, college life comes with more responsibility. You’ll need to be able to manage your time in order to complete all assignments and still maintain a social life.
In college you are able to study whatever you are interested in. You choose what classes you want to take and when you want to take them. For example, if you hate waking up early in the morning you can take night classes. You have to freedom to set your own schedule. Unfortunately in high school you have more limitations on what you can take. Most of the time your classes are based on what credits you must to earn in order to graduate. Also, in high school you have set times for your classes, like first period, second period, third period, etc.
Money is one of the main differences between college and high school. College is a lot more expensive than high school. You have to pay for tuition and fees, books, room and board, and a meal plan. All these necessities add up to thousands of dollars for just one year of schooling. In high school you have to pay your school fees and that’s about it. The cost of attending high school definitely costs a lot less than attending college due to a smaller amount of essentials. Finally, college life comes with more responsibility and more work.
Assignments are usually larger than ones given in high school and tend to be more time consuming. Typically, you’re supposed to spend at least three hours during the week working on assignments for every class you are taking. Most of the time work in high school is smaller because it’s usually due the next day. Your teachers try not to overwhelm you with a heavy load of work for one night. In college you are responsible for yourself and your work. Your professors aren’t going to push you to do your work like your teachers in high school did.
Also you must find a way to balance a busy schedule in college. Between work, school, and a social life things can be a little hard to keep track of but you have to be able to manage your time wisely in order to get everything accomplished. In conclusion, there are many differences between college life and life in high school. College is more personalized meaning everything is chosen by you. You pick your classes based on what you’re interested in not because you are required to. You chose what time you go to class based on your work schedule or based on when you feel like going.
Cost is a major difference between the two. College easily adds up to several thousands of dollars just for one year of schooling. High school on the other hand typically costs a few hundred dollars per year. Lastly, college comes with more responsibility. You have more school work that needs to be completed on top of other things. In high school you don’t have as much work to do which means you have some free time to do whatever. This change from high school to college is a lot to process but you begin to manage your time, take responsibility, and eventually begin to succeed.
