The assignment will be evaluated based on accurate explanations which fulfill the requirements of the questions and supported by credible points and references. 2. Type your assignment using “Times New Roman” font size 12 with 1. 5 spacing on A4 size paper. 3. Submit your assignment to your tutor before or by the 4th tutorial week. 4. The total number of pages is between 10-12 pages only, excluding copies of any visual aids used in the oral presentation and the references. . The assignment constitutes 30% of the course marks – 10% is allocated for the written text and 20% is allocated for the oral presentation. 6. This assignment should be prepared individually. 7. Plagiarism in any form is prohibited. Plagiarised materials will not be accepted. No marks will be given for plagiarised work. ASSIGNMENT This assignment is to be done individually. The assignment is divided into two parts: a written text and an oral presentation. The written text consists of a report.
The oral presentation is a 5-10 minute talk on the findings of your interviews. A. Written Text (10%) As part of the requirements for the OUMH1303 course at OUM, you undertake a series of face-to-face oral interviews on “What Makes Me a Malaysian”. This section of the assignment describes how you should set up the interviews, analyse the views of your interviewees and then write up the report. 1. Prepare 4-7 questions that you can use in each interview. You should discuss these questions on the LMS with your classmates or come up with them yourself.
You can also Google to source questions on national identity–try appropriate combinations of words such as ‘national identity’, ‘survey’, ‘Malaysian identity’, etc. These questions can be open-ended or they can be ‘Yes/No” questions. Examples of questions could be: a. What makes Malaysia a great country? b. How close do you feel to Malaysia: very close, close or somewhat close? c. Are you proud to be Malaysian? Why? d. What is your racial ethnic origin? e. What makes you a Malaysian? Give some reasons. 2. Please refer to your tutor to make sure these questions are viable and can generate sufficient answers for your report.
While the suggestion is 4-7 questions, you are welcome to have more than 7 questions if you feel it is necessary to get more information from your respondents. 3. Select three male and three female Malaysians in the age range of 25 – 35 years to make a total of six (6) people that agree to be interviewed by you. Tell them you are conducting a series of interviews as part of your OUM oral communication project. Assure them that their names and background information will be kept confidential and that you are only interested in their views on “What makes me a Malaysian? Do remind them before the interview to avoid racist statements or expressing negative views about people of other racial origins. 4. Write a 10-12 page report on “What Makes Me a Malaysian”. You report must consist the following: a. An introductory section on Malaysia as a young, multicultural country. Include a brief historical account of the nation’s formation and a description of it current composition of the various ethnic groups and their respective culture and languages. This introduction should be about 1-2 pages long. b.
A series of paragraphs containing the sub-topics addressed by your questions. Each sub-topic should present and discuss a summary of your respondents’ answers to a particular question or related issue. You must not type all of your respondents’ answers word for word but synthesise them under each question. You may, however, quote some parts of their answers to your questions to support your points in the discussion. c. A conclusion section that summarises the project and highlights the major conclusions that you drew from the discussion of the respondents’ answers above.
This conclusion should also be about 1-2 pages long. Include also suggestions about further ways of finding out about Malaysians’ perceptions about themselves and the nation and also promoting love for their country. B. Oral Presentation (20%) 1. This task consists of a 5-10 minute oral presentation about the findings of your interviews. Prepare a talk based on your report. However, because of the limit on time, you should plan to highlight the more interesting or important remarks made by your respondents in relation to “What Makes Me a Malaysian”. 2.
You may use any materials such as PowerPoint slides, posters or promotional brochures/pamphlets in your presentation. Proper preparation and use of such visual aids will be awarded a maximum of 5 marks out of a possible 20 marks for the whole presentation. 3. Do not memorise or read the speech. Speak naturally to the audience, remembering to maintain eye contact with your listeners as much as possible!
