English Essay Plan. Kelsea Ravenhill Intro- In the Laboratory and Macbeth they are both written by male writers who both create believable female characters. Throughout both of these the writers’William Shakespeare’ and ‘Robert Browning’ used techniques to create strong feelings to intrest the audience. In the Laboratory we see the character making revenge by poisioning her partners lover to make her husband suffer for humilating her.
Where as in Macbeth we see Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in conflict on whether Macbeth should follow his instinct or obey his partners instructions. Lady Macbeth- Strong feeling of ‘Power’-Shakespeare uses the technique of using’harsh words’ to create effect upon the audience. By making Lady Macbeth say’ have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums, and dash’d the brains out’. Not only does Shakespeare use alliteration to add tension and effect he also uses voilent verbs.
Trying to make the point by saying that she would love her baby as much as she could, but i because she has such a strong love for her husband and she was in the situatuion she made a promise of killing her own baby for him,she would go along with it,even if it was something like killing her own baby to follow her husband’s word and make him happy. Strong feeling of ‘Anger’-Shakespeare then goes on to using the technique of using rhetorical questions and personification. Lady Macbeth quates ‘was the hope drunk? Wherein you dress’d yourself? hath it slept since?. Shakespeare cleverly uses the structure to add effect upon the readers/auduience.
This allows the audience to feel Lady Macbeths feelings of anger and frustration. By using the rhetorical questions it shows she doesnt want Macbeth to get a word in forcing Macbeth to listen to her. Implying he is weak was another tactic Shakespeare used on Lady Macbeth to help her get her own way,to proceed furter in killing the king. Strong feeling of ‘Eagerness’- Finally Shakespeare then uses the techinque of referring to the past tense. She quates ‘when you durst do it then you were a man’. Shakespeare uses the past tesne to tell Macbeth thta he was a man when he agreed to proceed further in the king.
This implies that to Lady Macbeth he is no longer a man, because he is not doing as she wants,so she feels she no longer is in power and controlling the situation. She is questioning Macbeth’s manhood to inforce that she gets her own way. It also emphasises the fact on how keen Lady Macbeth is to become in power because Macbeth never actually states at any point he is going to do it,Lady Macbeth is just simply trying to persuade him. The Laboratory- Strong feeling of ‘Humiliation’-Browning creates a strong feeling of humiliation in stanza 2 by using the techinques of past tense, short sentences and repetition.
In Stanza 2 Browing refers to the past tense by showing us she previously felt humiliation by quating’he is with her and they know that i know’ but the stanza and the poem then go on to talk about how now she is doing something about it. They are making her to look the fool, knowing that everyone will know she is being cheated on, and this will make her feel powerless. But Browning clearly writes the poem so she is doing the unexpected because by quating’while they believe i shed tears’, this shows they think she upset and crying when she is actually planning revenge on poisoning his lover, going from victim to assassin, just from being there.
Uses the technique of repetition by turning it on its head, also using shortsentes adds effect. Strong feeling of ‘Jealousy and Anger’-Robert Browning then goes on to use the techniques of repetition and listing harsh words in stanza 6. By quating’and her breast, her arms and her hands should drop dead,it shows us she is jealous of her feminine beauty and wants to destroy the features that attracted her husband to her. Using repetition of the word ‘and’ empahises the fact she is very attractive and has more than one feature that attracted her husband and she wants to make her revenge by taking that away from her.
Strong feeling of ‘Power’-Finally Robert Browning goes on to using the technique of rhetorical questions and imperative verbs in stanza 7. Lady Macbeth quates’Quick- is it finished? ‘Here she is using imperative verb of ‘quick’ not only to show the audience/readers she wants him to hurry up so she has longer to watch her suffer but so she can feel she has some power back from demanding him to do as she says. Robert Browning wants the audience to come across in how she is feeling. Also she wants to get happiness from seeing the girl her husband cheating on her with suffer. Similarities-
Some similarities between the Laboratory and Macbeth are that they have the same subjects of someone killing or about to kill to get what they want and to feel power. Also both woman were seen as plotting and planning so they could make sure they were going to get what they wanted. Both woman were both eager for death to be the response on getting what they want to happen. Differences- Some differences between the Laboratory and Macbeth are that in Macbeth being a woman is seen as being as an obstacle, she wants to lose her femanine qualities so she can be powerful and in control as man would feel.
Where as in the Laboratory being a woman is seen as being a good thing so she can attract attention of the opposite sex and be another reason for getting whats he wants, using her beauty as another way of persuading the man to do as she says. Also in Macbeth Lady Macbeth isn’t worried about what might happen to her in after life for plotting the kings death, nevertheless in the Laboratory, she is worried about it coming back upon her and being found out. Conclusion-
After reading both personally i have began to feel both the Laboratory have strong feelings as in Macbeth looking at the time period calling upon the evil spirits, you would be seen as evil and you would be prepared for what might face on her in afterlife. However in the Laboratory stronger feelings come across as there seems to be more shouting of voilent words and becoming excited at the thought of her enemies suffering, which therefore meant I felt stronger feelings in the Laboratory.
