They need to be knowledgeable about what they are eating and where the food is coming from because if not, they will not be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In the article, “A Nation of Religious Illiterates;” the author Stephen Brother talks about how people need to be aware of all religions and what they are about before choosing one.

If they o not know the facts then they should not be able to classify themselves Into a certain religion. Brother states: “… A rhetoric of lament, and tucked inside that rhetoric is a certainty that not so long ago in a place not so far away things used to be much, much better” (Brother, 2003, p. 205). Brother is saying that many people think of literacy as something that they need to go back to. Americans need to be aware of these literates and broaden their horizons when they are thinking about the Importance of food literacy. All age groups around America are highly affected by his food literacy Issue.

Americans need to be literate In food so that they can keep a balanced diet in order to help them have longer life expectancy. What Americans eat and buy has an effect on agriculture (e. G. Small farms vs.. Big farms and they need to know that some of the foods that they are consuming may have a potential to cause disease. Being literate about food is knowing the brands and what ingredients that are In the foods being bought and eaten. If people are going to eat food everyday of their lives, they should know everything about what they are eating.

The problem is that a vast majority of people do not know what or how unhealthy the food is that they are eating. Lacking this important knowledge leads to an unbalanced diet, which can cause obesity and heart disease. In the article, “Relationship of Nutrition and Obesity,” it states: “The prevalence of obesity in people is rapidly increasing… This study determined that a lack of nutrition knowledge Is correlated with obesity’ (Thacker, p. 2). This shows that surveys were taken around America and that It Is proven that obesity Is a problem because the lack f knowledge in food and nutrition.

It is very important because obesity tends to lead to heart disease and short team life expectancy. This article was also written in 1999 meaning that obesity was a problem fourteen years ago and it has gotten much worse today. Another problem that occurs when a person Is Illiterate in food is the effect that impacts big and small farms. As fast food is increasing, the bigger farms are producing a lot more of that food for the big companies whereas the smaller, local farms are not. That potentially puts the small farms out of business.

The smaller the farm is, the better quality food it will provide because the farm is much more sanitary with less workers and not as many messes are being made. The bigger farms are trying to produce as much food as they can in the least amount of time. Therefore, equipment does not get washed regularly and it is not as sanitary as it should be. The last thing Americans would want in their lives is a food disease epidemic breaking out. Americans need to be aware of what kinds of chemicals are in their food and entering their bodies. An example of this would be organic foods vs.. On- organic foods.

Organic food is food that farmers grow and produce without using chemicals to fertilize, control weeds, or prevent livestock disease. Non-organic food is the complete opposite. The farmers use chemicals to get rid of pesticides, promote plant growth, manage weeds, and they give animals antibiotics to prevent disease and spur growth. Both organic and non-organic food have their strengths and weaknesses but many people tend to believe that organic foods are much better because they are “all natural. ” Although this assumption may be correct, is does not serially mean that these foods are healthier.

A lot of times they can be higher in calories and even more sugary. According to this article that talks about the health differences in organic and non-organic foods, it states: “Two downsides to organic foods is one: the cost and two: organic meats are not always the safest due to the lack of chemicals being used to destroy pesticides” (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2010). This example shows that people cannot always believe what they hear. In order to fully understand what they are putting in their bodies, people should want to be more iterate in food.

Although there are many disadvantages to being illiterate in food, people can easily research and find more information about what they are consuming. One scenario that would help strengthen this literacy would be teaching about food literacy in schools. The schools should introduce programs to make the students aware of their health. Not only do students need to be educated on this literacy but parents do as well. The people who teach these health programs in schools should connect the educational facts of health and present them in an emotional way.

If they connect these facts then they will capture the emotions of the audience by using empathy and sympathy. The value of health/food knowledge is highly important in America today because food is something that is part of peoples’ everyday lives. People cannot live without it. If people ignore it then they are at a health risk, and they do not realize how much it affects farmers and other food workers as well. In Scott Mucosa’s article “Blood in the Gutter,” he talks about how people need to use their imagination to fill in the blanks of certain scenarios.

McCollum also talks about closure and how important it is not only in comics but in reality as well. He states: “But closure in comics is far from continuous and anything but involuntary’ (McCollum, 2000, p. 142). McCollum is pointing out that people make a choice in what they do. They have complete control, which dictates their lives, this relates to food literacy because if people are literate they their choices, which dictate who they are and what they become. Along with this idea of closure that McCollum talks about, he is talking about how people tend to Jump to inclusions about food based on how the food is presented.

For example, there are the overly health-cautious people who think that organic foods are always going to be healthier and then there are the people who eat food based off of whether or not it looks good. They Jump to conclusions without knowing all of the facts. Different literates play an important role in America today. In order for people to be able to share knowledge about food and health and know what items they are putting into their bodies, they need to be literate in the subject of food and health.
