Certainly, automation and/or computerization has been and is being currently utilized in everything from transportation to logistics alike. Most freight forwarders among others utilize at least one form of automation or computer software; some utilize much more than that. Four particular ways that automation is utilized in the transportation/logistics industry are: GPS software, Bar Coding in products, Tracking Numbers, and finally Electronic Data Interface (EDI) among others.

Logically speaking, logistics would not work efficiently if not with the assistance of up to date technology known as GPS, which of course is an abbreviation for the “Global Positioning System. ” What this system has given to logistics is essential for logistics to work properly, and that is providing accurate and detailed directions for the various forms of transportation to utilize. In other words; if a shipment is traveling by car, a GPS can be utilized to access the best possible routes, so as to minimize interfering with traffic and reaching the desired destination in a much quicker time.

Furthermore, the GPS system has provided ocean freight forwarders the convenience of being better able to navigate on the water, by storing various access points and saving the best routes to take. This is obviously a very important element on the water, as sometimes this system can prevent disasters from occurring. Also, the GPS system has given transportation and logistics companies the ability to calculate the best possible routes, while utilizing other computer software, like Google maps, which of course utilized the GPS system.

Clearly, the benefits of this system to transportation/logistics companies are endless and have made these jobs much easier. Another important computerized mechanism that has proven to be very important these days for transportation/logistics companies is Bar Codes. What that enables a company to do is label every product that is sent out, and thus realize how many of each product is sent out and/or available. Bar codes provide for easier product differentiation, and thus help limit the search for a product as well. These days, almost all items in stores have a ar code that’s scans and that helps to institute pricing, as well as prevent a thief from going to far with a stolen product for example. Clearly, this method of differentiating products has proven to be essential for shipping companies, considering the amount of products they encounter on an everyday basis and is now something that’s become invaluable to the success of any company. In addition, the system associated with tracking numbers is an extremely important factor for logistics/shipping/transportation companies.

This is so, because almost any item that is sent from one place to another requires at least one means of transportation to reach its destination. This system provides for the opportunity to track packages; determine whether a package has been lost in transit; how much longer it will take for the item to be delivered, and above all brings comfort to the consumer that their item is somewhere in transit and has been sent out at the very least.

Clearly, this system is now rooted in almost all methods of transportation, including trucking and air alike. USPS, FEDEX, UPS and DHL are all freight forwarders that utilize tracking numbers, when dealing with almost all packages, aside from those that tracking confirmations aren’t paid for of course. The scope of transportation would simply never be as broad as is it today, without tracking numbers haven’t been implemented into this system.

This innovation simply bought peace of mind to so many companies and consumers alike, and has given them a link to manage their items between the point of sale to the point of receipt; at least electronically. Finally, the Electronic Data Interchange system is one of the most important items that have been incorporated into logistics and transportation entirely. What the main premise of this system is that it ultimately facilitates the exchange of information between different companies.

In other words; it allows for sales to be made easily, efficiently and with utmost convenience. This system has provided companies the ability to make customer invoices, sales receipts and other sale orientated documents within minutes or even seconds; something that previously would take days or weeks to complete with tireless data entry done by humans rather than machines. Clearly, this has allowed for logistics to flow much smoother, as they are able to have any documents at their disposal with the click of a mouse and thus increase productivity in the process.

Consequently, there has been a wide variety of change and innovation in the technology world that has created major benefits for transportation/logistics companies. These innovative techniques have created easier access to information and tracking among other things and thus have increased efficiency and effectiveness as a result. Clearly, the benefits of these changes outweigh any possible drawback for a logistics company and the possibilities are simply endless with their implementation.
