Left to Tell
“Left to tell” is the story of Immaculee Ilibagiza. Immaculee lived in Rwanda and was there when the Rwandan genocide occurred in 1994. More than 400,000 people were killed in this genocide which also included Immaculee’s family. The book tells us the story of courage, patience and faith. Immaculee was catholic and practiced her religion with full belief. She always practiced the best virtues which were told to her by her religion. That was what which made her live like this.
She lived 91 days in a tiny bathroom with 7 other women. This was the time when the people were killed just like the animals. After the genocide ended, and the killers of her tribe were caught, Immaculee forgave all of those who were responsible for the death of her family.
This was the noblest virtue possible. The revenge was so easy to take but she didn’t do that. She on the other hand chose the way that was taught to her by her religion. She believed in god and she believed that the peace can be the best possible way towards peace.
She believed in optimism and also in the fact that there is always a good person hidden inside every man. Sometimes it takes time to reach out, but nevertheless a chance should be given. That was why Immaculee did what she thought was the best for the people and for those who were killers. This was the right way of spreading peace that time. By forgiving the killers she made them realized that the good people are still there in the world and they will take every possible step to make people good. She knew that she will not get her family back, so killing other people will just increase the number of dead people. That’s what she didn’t want. She didn’t want the families of the killers to feel alone when their loved ones will be killed. She had suffered pain and realized that this is the right time to give sacrifice and forgive those to make the lives of the people better.
This act of patience is not common these days. Everyone is ready to take the revenge. It is always difficult to forgive those who have caused trouble to your loved ones. But Immaculee laid an impressive example of love and peace. This is how it should happen and everyone should follow this example to create peace in the world.
