Lesson by Jeehye Choe, Westminster Choir College of Rider University
Materials: CD- “Nella Fantasia”, Papers, Color pencils, Instruments ( Students must bring their own instruments)
Grade level: 7th -8th grade
What am I aiming for? At the end of the exercise, students should be able to adopt the Messiaen’s idea; identify music and color relationship; enhance the students’ musicality and musical expression; provide experience by engaging with each other’s work.
-Children will be asked to close their eyes and imagine a natural scenery while listening to the music “Nella Fantasia”: “Imagine you are in the place outside of classroom where you can see the trees, mountains, and flowers, waterfalls …think about what colors they are. Look at the sky, what color is it? Can you hear a bird singing? Can you feel the wind touch your hands and your face? Can you smell the grass and fresh air…?”
-The teacher will provide each student with color pencils and papers. The children will be asked to draw a picture with special attention given to the colors of the visual images that they imagined while listening to the music (Nella Fantasia).
-Each child will be asked to present and share his/her drawing with rest of the class and explain why they chose certain colors and objects in his/her drawing.
– The children will listen to “Nella Fantasia” one more time. This time, the children will be asked to look at their own drawing and come up with three adjectives that would describe their drawing while listening to the music.
-The children are asked to pick a partner and look at the each other’s drawing and three adjective words. They must then come up with their own melody from the drawings and the adjectives using their own instruments.
-Each student is asked to perform what they have improvised for each other and share it to the class.
-The teacher and the students will discuss about what the students experienced from drawing and improvising each other’s work?
-The artworks made while listening to the music will be presented in an art gallery and the students will perform the music that they have come up with in front of friends and faculty members from other classrooms. Each student will introduce each other’s drawing and perform it.
