Nowadays most larger organisations employ professional training officers to run training programmes for employees.

Training is divided into two main categories:-

On the job training

This means that the employee acquires their training or development in the workplace itself. For many people they enjoy the direct link with their job and can see more clearly how relevant the training or development is to the performance of the job.

Off the job training

This means attending courses which may be in a college or a training centre away from the workplace .This type of training is important to an employee’s career development as well as being an integral part of a training programme

What type of training does Lightwater Valley carry out?

The training is done before the start of the season and takes a full weekend, the training takes place at Lightwater Valley in the theatre and is run by the qualified management who have qualifications in assessment of food hygiene and health and safety. They expect the staff to take notes from the session and the programme is run as shown:-

9am :- Get people inside theatre and hand out relevant handbooks and information.

10am:- Start with an introduction from General manager

11am:- Start Health and Safety (I.E manual handling e.t.c)

Purpose of Training

Lightwater Valley feel that it is important to train staff due to the Likelihood of an accident occurring if there was no training, they will not let a member of staff work without the sufficient training, as it is dangerous not only to the employee but the people working with.

Training is for the employee to learn new skills in order to carry them out in the job; it is very common for business to train staff and is part of an aim for the business. The training may take one hour or one day depending of the size and structure of the business.

In Lightwater Valleys case it’s is 2 days training as there are so many workers to train and being so many different departments to split down they may have to run the training over several weekends as they may not be able to fit all the staff into one weekend.

Analysis of the recruitment procedure of Lightwater Valley

From being through the recruitment process I can see how effective the method of recruiting is. I think it is a good procedure do to there being a lot of staff to go through and also being a good method. It is also easier for the management who employ the staff for the different departments as they do no have to put the staff through serious exams and make it harder for not only there selves but the candidates.

A disadvantage of the recruitment procedure is being long and drawn out as they first need to advertise then interviews and then induction and it can be very time and money consuming but most recruitment processes is like that.

Judgement of the success of my application

When I applied for the job I told the truth about myself and got other people to read it and make sure it’s correct which it was. I think my application was successful as I got the job .I also thought I would be successful as I said when I could work and said that I was polite and confident which is what an employer would expect form a candidate.

I also said I was a student willing to work weekends and that is what they mainly look for as I would be able to work the summer holidays and any other holidays, also Lightwater Valley is know for being one of the highest employers in the Ripon and Northallerton area..

Other Training Methods

I think they could change their training methods as it is hard for them to train all the staff in a set amount of time with a set amount of money. They could maybe open a centre for all the theme parks to train their staff this would be good as it would save money and maybe be easier on the management due to them spending a lot of time training.

They could maybe train the staff while they work, these could be affective but if the park is busy it may not work very well. Also with the use of ICT they could create a program so that employees could go through their health and safety and food hygiene on a computer and then be tested on it to get the certification.
