Linguistic Final Exam Paper: Research Paper
The topic is primarily focusing on a UFO that landed near Roswell, New Mexico. The situation is given as the researchers having performed already some studies and trials in order to communicate with GLU but it showed that findings had found only wildly gestures and some incomprehensive noises. Being a Science Editor for The Stinkpot Times, my primary goal is to investigate and determine whether this entity from the outer space also practice some forms of communication or languages. If I would be given the chance to have security clearance and dispatched to the secret laboratory where the “Grotty Little Ugmo” or GLU is being held, I would probably ask some questions and consider some points on how this entity react or form gestures and produce these incomprehensive noises in response to some specific form of signals or actions. In these manner, I will be able to formulate some analysis whether this thing could understand or decode some form of signals which will enable it to understand or will make it react to some acts produced during the tests. Language is the primary form of communication that was primarily derived from gestures, but it can also be stated that language is different thing from gestures. Thus, this only means that the analysis of gestures and noises produce by this thing can lead to some form of communication but these would be insufficient to formulate a conclusion that GLU do really exhibit forms of language.
Grammatical gender may not necessarily mean a strong version of linguistic determinism. Some languages depend primarily on the speakers who possess the problems in determinism that eventually lead to creation of seemingly polite terms and parallel pairs. Examples of these are the French who were able to invent some words to enable them to distinguish and provide the intended purpose of the language. It may not be specifically means strong determinism since some could be use referring to general specifications. For example “Ms’ can be used when referring to women who are divorced, separated, widowed, feminist or lesbians.
Language change could be very helpful if we are going to sort out the “linguistic sexism” caused by the use of grammatical gender. But it is not very advisable to rely all the matters in these type of language since some lexical items created can have unintended results or interpretations.
The fact that grammatical gender appears to be modularized may greatly help and create some improvements on these linguistic terms and in most cases, this modules can be applicable to various applications. As shown in the case of Dante, it is clearly seen that this modules provides great use in language determinism especially in identifying gender.
Though we have seen such type of examinations on these facts, it is not enough to say that human language is innate rather it is just right to say that the capacity of man to acquire language it is more likely to say as natural. Primitive language does not really exist since the basis of language cannot be the number of vowel or consonant sounds. Another evidence is that a primitive man that is considered to be inexperienced and do not have complete understanding of proper linguistic structures because they are left with the case-marking and word structures. One good example of this fact is kids having provided innate structure but other input is lacking which explains templatic leaning. Some languages have been termed as primitive or innate but this is only due to improvisation of syntax and vocabulary. These types of languages are commonly called as Pidgins.
The ability to utilize and execute phrase structure rules is an important part of our capacity for language, thus, it can also be stated that language do precedes thought since word and phrase structures formed through our thoughts are simply components of our capacity to promote language. Clear evidences were also established states that thought can also be independent of language. Examples are “5-month old kids can add and subtract” and we are also used in saying “that’s not what I meant to say”. It is also important to consider that our thoughts are somehow captured by visual images like animals being familiar of some processes. Moreover, cognitive abilities are more useful than linguistic abilities in some specific applications like diesis and references. This is further described by the comparison between the use counting systems over the word “many”; the word “couple” and “a few”. One thing more is the Piraha word for “one” does not signify it to be pointing to just one subject. This just made it different from the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis which stated that perceptions were only made possible by linguistic habits and linguistic systems that creates our thoughts about the world.
