For my research paper, I chose the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka Snap. I know much of the basic of SNAP, but I know nothing to in depth about it. A lot of people I know have it and its such a big part of mine and those I know lives so I feel it’s my duty to find out more about it. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides individuals and families with food stamps which can be used to purchase select food. Food stamps are reloaded on to an EST card after the 1st of each month. The U.

S. Department of Agriculture decides on the amount of food stamps each individual and families based on the amount of income and the size of the family. They do not discriminate on race and gender, In fact despite contrary belief more white people are on Snap than blacks. SNAP helps 43 million people a month. Net Income which Is after child care and special needs must be below the poverty line to receive benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides benefits to low-income people that they can use to buy food to improve their diets.

SNAP recipients spend their benefits (provided on an electronic card that is used like an ATM card) to buy eligible food in authorized retail food stores. Through nutrition education partners, SNAP helps clients learn to make healthy eating and active lifestyle choices (District of Columbia Supplemental Nutrition). Based off of my research the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a government assistance program to help low-income households pay for food” (What Is the SNAP).

To sum up my program in my own words it is the way people who are below the poverty line get government assistance that should solve heir problem for eating. What it does Is It gives people who can’t afford to buy food money so that they can buy specific food, and the assistance It offers is that now the people who are struggling to decide what to do with their money they don’t have to worry about putting It towards food. This Is how many people are on SNAP “As of August 2011, 45. 8 million persons were participating in SNAP’ (SNAP: Frequently Asked Questions).

SNAP helps people by giving them a certain amount of money that way they can go out and buy food that they want. Yes the SNAP program does meet immediate needs because it gives people money for food although it isn’t a lot of money which means if that is your only income then you probably will still be poor. This is how you can determine if you are eligible for the SNAP program “SNAP eligibility rules require that participants be at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Level” (SNAP: Frequently Asked Questions).

Depending on how long you may need these benefits will say what you need and here Is the break down “SNAP benefits vary from household to household, depending on the number of people within a should, the employment status of the recipient(s), the age and health of the children), SNAP benefits are limited to a 3-month period, at which point the recipient Nil have to submit a renewal application. Most households under the SNAP program receive benefits for a 6-month period before requiring renewal. Benefit periods can range from 1 month to 3 years. (SNAP: Frequently Asked Questions). This is how the process is once an application for the SNAP program has been submitted “The DES office must act on applications within 30 days of the date a person submits a signed application. Eligible households will have benefits in their BET account within four days of the date that DES grants their application” (What Is the SNAP). If I wanted to be a part of the SNAP program I would “Apply for SNAP at the DES office that serves {Our town or download an application at http://www. T. Gob/des/lib/des/PDF/ “-1 food. PDF and mail it in. Applicants can do their required interview by phone; it is not necessary to go to a DES office” (What Is the SNAP). Just have I said people are still are getting help, but there are many that are not. To help this problem I say they would try to raise as much money they need to help everyone that needs help. Not the ones that have more or less than other people, but people that don’t have enough food to eat all together.

The suggestions that I would make for this program, is that they make the eligibility rate lower than what it is now. It may not show in people’s bank accounts but some people really need the help. People buy Food Stamps (or SNAP), from others because they don’t have enough to buy food themselves. And I Mould allow people to buy more than what is listed on the limit of what they can buy.
