In different stages of life, no matter what the setting or the ethnicity is, humanity encounters similar experiences in life. As the time goes by, all the protagonists represent identical signs of maturing and exhibits empathy through family loyalty and overcoming certain obstacles. Each story contributes to the same universal themes. There are common universal themes connecting to different stories and convey similar messages . The unlike stories portray the diverse aspects of humanity where the readers can relate to. Maturity is something what everyone goes through once in their life.
Never mind where overseas someone lives, growing up displays as a universal theme. In Napoleon Dynamite, the protagonist is the target for many bullies at his school. After building a friendship with a new student named Pedro, Napoleon learns to be considerate of other people. Napoleon and his friend Debbie gives full support for Pedro’s school presidential election and Napoleon embraces to dance in front of the whole school just for Pedro. His skit and Pedro’s speech, “I will make all your wildest dreams come true “opens many students’ hearts. The Protagonist makes sacrifices which is an indication of definite maturity.
On the other hand, Children of Heaven which takes in place in Tehran, expresses growing up in a more realistically presented in the adult world. Ali the protagonist loses his sister’s only pair of shoes. Replacing a pair of shoes means a fortune to the family’s difficult financial situation. Ali takes responsibility and manages to keep the whole “shoe “situation as a secret. Unlike his age, He sacrifices things like playing with his friends and helps his dad with his work. Although the two stories’s setting and the conflict is different, they convey similar meaning.
Also both protagonists show their ability to solve problematic issues which means maturity. Being sacrificial to someone takes enormous effort. In the same manner, Raymond’s run’s squeaky and Viva La Causa’s Caesar Chavez contributes to the similar universal theme, Sacrifice. The story takes place in Harlem, New York. Just taking care of her handicapped brother Raymond is a handful of work. Squeaky is capable of always taking care of him. When people has “a lot of smart mouth to say about “Raymond, she is always there for him. Squeaky abdicates her childhood moments for her brother and know to put family the priority.
A movie based on a true story, Viva La Causa resembles sacrifice also. Hispanic workers at most of the grapes farms at California get mistreated and get paid very little. The protagonist, Caesar Chavez was willing to sacrifice his own life to change the union to be fair and to provide basic needs for the farm workers. Caesar was a role model and an inspiration to many people. To stop violence, Caesar fasted for many days risking his health. Identical to Squeaky, Caesar Chavez took great responsibility and embraced what he had to do for other people’s rights.
Being sacrificial means doing the righteous actions with out caring what other people have to say. In different setting and conflicts, Both Chavez and Squeaky did what was right and made the correct choices. Empathy can come in many varieties. Its often expressed as a universal theme, which empathy is clearly appears in Green Gulch and Brother. Bailey feels empathetic because people judge his sister by her features. He also would “take revenge in a voice like cooling bacon grease. ” Since Bailey was the pride of the family, Maya was not in the spot light.
Feeling empathy, Bailey was he most daring and entertaining brother and always made Maya the priority on his list. He understood her situation and that represented empathy. Compare to brother, Green Gulch relates to the theme empathy. By losing his innocence, the protagonist spot the killing of a giant turtle in a gloomy place called the“Green Gulch “. The protagonist feels empathetic for the turtle by referring to the killers as “ not human” This was a big impact on the protagonist and said, “ he never forgot that moment, because it was monstrous and corroding knowledge. Universal theme connects anywhere in this world with knowledge of life. There are certain themes that portray the significance of each story like empathy, growing up and giving sacrifice. Maturity and Sacrifice both represents the loss of innocence forced by the society and difficult times around them. Although the each story is portrayed as different forms of era, setting and different characters, they still give the readers the clear message of certain morals.
