MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE STUDIES AND HOW IT AFFECTS HUMAN LEARNING
It is innate among humans to be fascinated by the different things that they particularly see around them. It could not be denied then that through the years, this particular fascination within the different elements that could be seen in the human environment actually developed into the many discoveries and inventions that humans produced. Through passing civilization of humans, it could be observed that the people were never contented with what they already have or what they have already accomplished. This is especially true in terms of science and technology as well as in arts and literature. It is indeed undeniable that people recreate the things that are already existent within their own society. The fact that they have already been able to see what they could do regarding a certain type of field, they intend to even do better the net time that they deal with the same invention. Yes, humans never get tired of reinventing everything there is in the environment. Why is this so? Philosophers have always noted human intelligence as the primary factor that makes the human creation different from that of the other God-made creations. The humans’ ability to innovate their own achievements to even better results for the present generation to see, has particularly noted them to be those who are capable of reinventing themselves to be able to evolve from generations to generations.
In Gardner’s study, he pointed out that intelligence is one particular aspect in human beings that is continuously subjected to undoubted success towards the future. This is primarily because of the fact that the human brain never ceases to improve its way of reasoning out especially when it is nourished in the right procedure. This undeniable truth is what is primarily being noted within the study entitled Intelligence Reframed. In the field of educational advancement, there are other studies that particularly point out to the
Howard Gardner. Multiple Intelligences After Twenty Years. <http://www.pz.harvard.edu/PIs/HG_MI_after_20_years.pdf> American Educational Research Association, Chicago, Illinois, April 21, 2003. Howard Gardner is a past developmental psychologist in Harvard University. It was during that those 21 years when he was able to observe the ways by which human intelligence spurs out. It starts to flourish from the right training of the brain to think and to reason out on certain situations. From this particular experience of the said author, he then tried to elaborate on the matters of human knowledge development based on psychological, emotional as well as mental enhancement of an individual. As a part of his research, he decided to publish a series of studys that particularly deal with the said topic. The intelligence-series-books were primarily designed by Gardner to at least allow the people who are less able to understand technical terms of psychology to understand the process of intelligence development among humans in a much more improved perspective. One of his series books includes “Intelligence Reframed Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century”, which primarily discusses the different dimensions of learning and development among human individuals. According to Gardner, there are at least seven basic modes of human intelligence that is spurred on by the rightful enhancement of the mind to perform at its best capabilities. The said modes of intelligence include verbal and logical – mathematical, and visual – spatial, bodily – kinesthetic, musical – rhythmic, and the two most criticized but equally important of all of human intelligences, interpersonal and intrapersonal. These primary dimensions of knowledge shapes the capabilities of an individual to excel in certain areas of intelligence in his life. Along with these dimensions, Gardner posts the different theories of learning and mental development that could assist human individuals in actually nourishing their intelligence for better use in the future.
Gardner actually points out the use of the MI theory in learning within the context of the entire reading. As a person, the author of this review aims to become widely knowledgeable about the things that he primarily sees in the environment. Along with this particular need among human individuals, Gardner attests to the fact that people are able to comprehend with present developments through the use of MI theory, which primarily deals with the individual assessment of a person upon the environment that he is currently living in. The step-by-step procedure by which people are able to comprehend with their environment along with all the changes that occurs within it is the primary aspect of the usage of MI theory and its integration with the innate procedure of learning in the human brain. The four dimensions of developing human intelligence as per introduced and developed by Gardener includes moral, spiritual, existential, and naturalist enhancement of intelligence. On the part of the author of this review, his being equally moral and spiritual actually helped him in developing his intelligence much especially in terms of being directly connected with the divine laws thus living in a more peaceful life than expected.
Overall, it could not be denied that Gardner’s study gives a clear picture of how humans actually deal with the process of enhancing one’s particular capability of thinking and reasoning out. More often than not, people are noted of having the need for progress. Their minds and their capability to use it in a progressive state then answers this particular need through the nourishment that they themselves are implying upon their thinking abilities. . It is through this that people became more aware of the world around them, they cared more than ever with the political agendas, the social issues as well as other information that concern their interests. True, the changing situation in the society and the demand towards progress requires that human intelligence be perfected in a way that it particularly caters to the needs of the entire humanity. The human brain’s ability to store and restructure information that were accepted by it through the years of an individual’s life is particularly a proof that the application of humans’ intelligence could still be perfected as generations are still to come along.
Rashmi Kumbar. Application of Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory for the Effective Use of Library Resources by K-2 Students: An Experimented Model. Zydus School for Excellence, India. http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla72/papers/142-Kumbar-en.pdf. WORLD LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CONGRESS: 72ND IFLA GENERAL CONFERENCE AND COUNCIL. This study particularly notes the major issues that are related to the actual application of the MI theory pursued by Gardner in actual practice. Through using a particular school as a sample population for the said study, the researchers of the study were actually able to create a more visible application result of the said practice of learning among young students.
Declan, Kelly. Predicting Learning Characteristics in a Multiple Intelligence Based Tutoring System. https://www.cs.tcd.ie/crite/publications/sources/ITS2004Paper5.pdf. National College of Ireland. This study dealt with the application of the MI theory of Gardner through tutoring practices. As support to the primary literature to be used within the research as noted in the beginning of this bibliography, this study aims to present the end results on how the said Theory of learning actually applies to actual learning especially for young learners.
Sandra Kerka. Multiple Intelligences and Adult Education. http://www.calpro-online.org/eric/docs/tia00085.pdf TRENDS AND ISSUES 2000 Clearinghouse on ALERT NO. 17. Adults are actually subjected to learning difficulties today. This study then offers the possible successful use of MI theory in adult education. The researchers of the study actually noted the need of applying the procedures suggested by the MI theory in assisting adults understand their lessons along with making them more interested in the subjects that are regularly presented to them through their classes. It is believed by the researchers of this study that the use of MI theory into actual practice is indeed considered fruitful in helping adult learners have great benefits from whatever particular lessons that they are trying to learn.
CAROL SMITH. Multiple Cultures, Multiple Intelligences: Applying Cognitive Theory to Usability of Digital Libraries. http://www.librijournal.org/pdf/2006-4pp227-238.pdf James C. Kirkpatrick Library, University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg, MO, USA. Digital libraries are now equipped with self-learning programs that are designed to help the readers have a better understanding of the subjects that are presented to them through the library. Most likely, this study aims to use the MI theory in proving that digital learning strategies could also be used to enhance the learning capabilities of learners attaining education through online educational institutions.
APPLICATION OF CONCEPT INTO ACTUAL PRACTICE
v Program of Studies:
In terms of applying MI in program studies, the literatures reviewed herein certainly notes the consequential results of using the said theory of writing into actual practice. It could be observed that the utilization of the five senses of human individuals along with the other seven multiple intelligences that humans posses, learning could become more productive and directly successful. Understandably, such process aims to help a learner appreciate learning through involving all the necessary senses that they posses to be able to create a more interesting and self-evaluative process of understanding for the learners.
v Personal Growth
The evaluation of literatures on the part of the author of this research actually gave the author a clearer view of the major use of Multiple Intelligences in clearing the processes by which a person learns from life and the lessons that it presents to them. Considerably, understanding how the mind works through the implementation of the seven multiple intelligences within the process of learning among humans made the author more considerate as to how he is able to utilize all his sense to get the gist out of the lessons that are further presented to him both through life experiences and formal education.
v Current Role
As a learner, the author further observed that MI theory increases one’s capability in learning as much as he could from the lessons that are presented to him from time and again. Considerably, such theory of learning helped the author to increase his competency in understanding life experiences and the lessons presented to him to the best benefit that he could derive from them.
As a professional, he learned that MI theory suggests the motivation of learners through the use of all the senses of the individuals to help them get the best out of the lessons that they need to learn from the experiences that they need to deal with in life.
EVALUATION FOR PERSONAL APPLICATION
Personally, the author views the Multiple Intelligence theory as a productive process by which a person could actually gain the best learning that he could get from the lessons that are presented to him every now and then. Getting the best out of the many experiences that they face with everyday actually comes out from the motivation that they get from the fact that they are able to increase their competence as an individual through using all their senses and their sources of intellectual learning. It is through this particular sense of understanding that humans are able to turn out to be the best individuals that they could become.
MI and Learning Application of the Theory
Around the age of schooling years, youths are facing a crucial period in their own respective lives that are very much complicated and very much challenging yet it is significantly important. In this period in one’s life, development in every aspect of living is crucially fast thus, one must strive to develop his or her own personality to meet the challenge of personality development and social responsibility. Around this period, developing a program that is focused on protecting the crucial development of youngster in school age and at the same time promoting their own personal development is very much important because this period will generally affect the most of their own lives.
Developing a program for such cause can also be at some point challenging and very much rewarding. To sufficiently meet the demands of the said cause, the planner must first solicit help and participation from different social institutions such as schools, church, government and the community itself. To accomplish this, one must first launch awareness campaigns to encourage supporters and advocates that will help in accomplishing the said programs. Doing so will significantly increase the chances of success of the mobilization and establishment of the said program of youth development.
The program itself must be able to encompass the different vital aspects of youth and their personal and social development such as healthy and moral forms of recreation, academic and career assistance programs, social activities and community participation and others. In achieving such visions, the concept of establishing a youth organization appears to be very much beneficial and appealing for the said programs. In addition, with the help of the community and other social institutions, such goals can be easily achieved because of the contributions and participations of the other concerned individuals.
Protecting and helping the personal and social development of the youths especially those in the school age is very much important for the cause of developing a strong and healthy society in the future. By promoting active living and social awareness, young individuals can actually learn and become responsible and moral citizens of the future society who will push further forward the progress of humanity. Through the application of MI theory, the thorough way of teaching young learners could then be expected to give better results of learning on the students’ part.
