Oedipus’ downfall was being figuratively blinded by not seeing the truth of his life about killing his own father and marrying his birth mother. Chris Brown’s tragic flaw was his anger, which led him to physically abusing singer and then girlfriend, Rihanna. Some people praised Chris Brown for what he had done, saying Rihanna, the victim, had gotten what she deserved. Months after the incident, Chris Brown released a statement saying, “Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. Chris Brown realized his mistakes and expressed the incident as his “deepest regret. ” He apologized to Rihanna and “accepted full responsibility for his actions. ” One of Chris Brown’s downfall was witnessing his mother being physically abused by his father at a young age. This led to a cycle of abuse for Chris Brown. Oedipus and Chris Brown faced harsh punishments and an exile for their wrong doings. After Oedipus discovered that he was the one involved in the murder of King Laius, his own father, he demanded to be exiled out of Thebes immediately.

Much like Oedipus, Chris Brown was also exiled, but in a different way. Chris Brown was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community service. At that time, his songs were not being played on the radio and he was not invited to take part in the 2009 Grammy Awards. To top it off, Chris Brown lost a lot of dedicated fans along with endorsements. However, the reaction of Chris Brown’s exile was not taken lightly. Many people were left unhappy. Fans were angry because he could no longer record music.

Others were upset because they thought his punishment was simply not enough. Both Oedipus and Chris Brown were prime examples of tragic heroes. They had everything a person could ever imagine, only to lose it all from their tragic flaws. Pride and anger caused situations that could have been easily prevented. From the story above, people can learn some wonderful lessons about pride and anger. From Oedipus’ mistakes, the reader can learn that truth and humbleness are the two central components of living the right way.

Oedipus was blinded by his pride and somewhat self-righteousness and refused to acknowledge that he, “The Great Oedipus,” could have been the plague of the city. For most people, pride will be a downfall and sometimes the blind are able to see more than those with excellent eyesight. Another lesson learned is fate cannot be escaped; if it is meant to be, then it will be. From Chris Brown’s experience, people learned that it is better to talk out their anger rather than taking it out on someone else.
