I think of Optimism as a positive mental attitude. A more formal definition of optimism is an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and or to anticipate the best possible outcome. People are generally either optimistic or pessimistic. Being optimistic or having a positive outlook can include being optimistic about life, family, career and money. Optimistic people tend to see a glass half full and pessimists tend to see a glass half empty. Most people already know if they are optimistic or pessimistic by nature.
People can also choose to be more optimistic and positive about events and situations and arise in their everyday life. “The essence of optimism is that it takes no account of the present, but it is a source of inspiration, of vitality and hope where others have resigned; it enables a man to hold his head high, to claim the future for himself and not to abandon it to his enemy. ” Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) Pastor, Theologian, German Resistance Fighter in World War II. Being optimistic about life is having a positive outlook of everyday and future events.
An example of life optimism would be when you get into a car wreck and total your vehicle and come away without a scratch and think “I sure am lucky to be alive. ” Being optimistic about your job or career is also important. Optimism in this area would mean being positive, having a good attitude and working hard to achieve your goals. Remaining optimistic about the growth and health of a family is important as well. Optimism most definitely is an infectious attribute. Lastly and maybe the hardest thing to remain optimistic about is money. Sometimes you feel like you just don’t know what you’re going to do to be able to pay something.
For me things always seem to work out which makes me even more optimistic about the future. I like to think optimism comes easy for me. In most situations I remain optimistic. I have been in three car wrecks and in two of those the vehicle was totaled. In all the wrecks no one was hurt badly. So for me in these situations I was just glad everybody was ok. I really never even cared about the condition of my vehicles. When my wife and son were in the hospital after my wife had my son eleven weeks early with severe complications, I remained optimistic that everyone would be ok in time.
When I got out of high school and wasn’t ready for college I really wanted to work at Tinker Air Force Base. For years I applied and kept applying for sheet metal jobs. I never gave up I was sure eventually I would get a job there. Three years ago after six years of applying every time a job opened, I finally got the job. More recently my wife has had a cancer scare but I have remained very optimistic about her future health. People have been optimistic since the beginning of time. Scientists who have made or will make huge discoveries and break throughs are optimistic people.
They have to be so they can think outside of the box and beyond what is known as fact. These people commonly deal with pessimistic people who tell them they are crazy or something isn’t possible. Mike Gundy the head football coach of my Oklahoma State Cowboys knew he could lead the program to new heights. After eight years as head coach in the 2011-2012 season Oklahoma State won their first outright conference title and beat Stanford in a BCS bowl. Country leader or civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. , who was steadfast in his belief that this country could achieve equal rights among people.
Presidents of our country would have to be optimistic to be able to run a country. Another good example of an optimist is actor Michael J Fox. He announced in 1998 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. After the disbelief subsided he went to work on making things better for himself. Being a true optimist he published a book titled “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist”. “ Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement… no pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit. Helen Keller (1880-1968) There is a lot to be said about positive thinking. It seems the universe rewards us when we are positive and optimistic. It has happened too many times in my life. Times where I just knew beyond a doubt something good was going to come to me and or my family.
Sometime in life it can feel like your back is against the wall and nothing is going right, but remaining optimistic is the way through these troubling times. Remaining optimistic in these particular times is often a catalyst for being optimistic about future events or troubles arise. Being optimistic can also positively affect the eople around you at work and home. It is also very good too remain optimistic when you are diagnosed with an illness or injured. Knowing that you will be fine and will heal has a huge effect on your recovery time. Optimism is a positive mental attitude that I believe can be achieved by anyone. I definitely believe optimism goes hand in hand with having faith and hope. When you wake up in the morning just have faith and know that your day is going to be a good day. When problems come up and times are tough you have to know they are going to be better. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. ”- Dr. Seuss
