Holbrook-White, the article on poorness by Michael J. Paquette, and

? Keeping Women And Children Last? by Ruth Sidel made me see the

issues of poorness in a different manner. I ne’er realised what sort of people

were populating in poorness, and the true grounds why they are at that place. What

amazes me the most is how much these people need aid, and how small the

authorities is making to assist them. The authorities should put up work

plans for these people to assist them acquire better occupations and do adequate

money to last.

The politicians in Washington D.C. and all over the U.S. want

nil more than to cut back on authorities support for the people in

poorness. The authorities doesn? T believe that most of the people really

demand this money from AFDC. They can? t acquire it because they don? t meet the

proper standards set by the authorities. Either they? re non hapless plenty,

they? re non hapless in the right manner? or they need the money for the incorrect

The reading in the book Keeping Woman and Children Last, showed

clip and clip once more the flooring narratives of how people fall into poorness after

populating a in-between category life for decennaries. Reasons refering to illness, decease,

unemployment, divorce and accidents left these people with nil and the

authorities would decline to assist them. These people are called the? New

Poor? ( Sidel, 1998, p.60 ) . Their societal security and pensions are non plenty

for them to populate on so they must trust on these financess to assist.

? With matrimony being touted today as a cardinal path out of poorness, few

critics of the picks and behavior of hapless adult female talk approximately matrimony as

a way into poverty. ? ( Sidel, 1998, p.60 )

I ne’er thought that matrimony could take to poverty until I read this

narrative from? Keeping Women And Children Last? . A public assistance worker married

one of her clients and ended up on public assistance because of her matrimony. She

married a adult male who had? small instruction, a drug job and an intoxicant

problem. ? ( Sidel, 1998, p.60 ) Their matrimony fell apart because of his maltreatment

to his married woman and kids and the adult female was forced to travel for aid from the

topographic point where she used to work, a public assistance office. They got back together

finally after he came out of a rehabilitation plan. He so started

with the drugs and intoxicant once more and she was force to go forth him to use for

? Those who are stigmatizing public assistance receivers do non indicate to all those

immature female parents who are valorously caring for their kids on meager

AFDC cheques while fighting to finish their education. ? ( Sidel, 1998,

p.63 )

Parent who receive AFDC cheques that are traveling back to school to

better measure up themselves for better occupations in order to better supply for their

households. One adult female came off the streets of New York City and went from

imploring at supermarkets to go toing Columbia University through their

Higher Education Opportunities Program ( HEOP ) . ? She is invariably

fearful that HEOP will be cut back and that? public assistance reform? will coerce her

to discontinue school and g

o back to work full time. ? ( Sidel, 1998, p.64 ) These

people need help while they are in school, but public assistance reform is non the sort

of aid they need. These plans should have more authorities support

to non merely break the people and assist the kids but to better society.

Some people are besides stating that individual female parents have more kids to

have more money from the AFDC. This is where the term? adult female have

babes for benefits? ( Holbrook-white, 1998, p.1 ) comes from. Politicians like

Bob James and Robert Rector believes that these adult females are rip offing the

system. Study? s have shown that even though AFDC benefits have fallen

across the state 47 % since 1970, individual female parent childbirth has about

doubled. Statisticss in Alabama show that more than half the babes born in

Alabama are unplanned. I feel that these cutbacks on public assistance reform are

merely excuses to pass less on the hapless and more on the wealthy.

The statistics on specific cultural groups are pathetic. 33 % of

Spanish americans live in poorness. Sidel shows that that the mean white household

income is $ 20,000 more than the mean black household income. She besides

shows that? Connecticut, one of the richest provinces in the state, has since

passed one of the most restricted public assistance measures adopted by any state. ? ( Sidel,

1998, p.62 ) Our authorities and the politicians who run it care more about

arms of war and dinner parties than puting that wasted money on the

people of their state. The authorities sets up plans aimed to assist the

hapless that merely ache them even more.

If it were up to me I would put up particular on the job plans for these

people who need the aid. They would be trained for better occupations and they

would have child care aid while they worked. They would be paid

and have full benefits and so when they are ready the would be helped

in happening a occupation that meets their new makings, that paid good plenty to

back up their kids and have medical benefits. A plan like this

would be dearly-won but everyone would profit from it. Woman will be able to

back up their households, and the kids will hold an chance at a better

life. A life where they could have Christmas nowadayss, where they didn? T

hold to worry if they were gon sodiums have dinner at place. Where they could

hold new places and some new apparels.

The authorities has to assist these people the right manner. They have no

right to allow these hapless people live like this any longer. I ne’er realized how

much of a job poorness was in our state. These readings made me

genuinely see how incorrect our state is and how shortly we must do it right.

Because if we do non do it right shortly we may non hold another opportunity to

make so, and these people would hold suffered like this for nil. Their

illustrations should do a difference and alteration things. Our authorities

demands to pay more attending to its destitute people and make something about it.
