GPA is most important tool in deciding the performance level of any student who is ambitious of taking admission in a respectable university. With similar ambitions I am applying for Master’s Degree program with a GPA of 2.8. The following essay explains reasons for my low GPA in undergraduate studies.
I am a good academic student alongside I am active in a wide range of co-curricular activities. Here is a list of extra activities in concise which I carried out during my undergraduate studies:
· Sunday school — Taking care of toddles at church
· School track — 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and long jump
· School Choir – Singing
· SBU club — on campus
· Love works – Program where students are sent to poor countries to give aid, feed and help the needy, and to spread good news of the gospel.
· Did two part time jobs.
WHY MY GPA IS LOW
GPA’s are no doubt a performance yardstick for any student who exists in this cut throat competition. But GPA’s do not decide the career success of any candidate who wants to study further. Similar is my case; as I have applied for master’s degree program with a GPA of 2.8. Even though my GPA is below 3.3, I can say that I am a keen student with strong concepts.
I entered the undergraduate University with a GPA of 3.3 from junior college but with time my GPA dropped down due to hectic schedule of school and extracurricular activities. I have been an active participant in activities apart from my regular studies from my junior college days which indicate my multitasking ability. I started my studies as a premed student at university but later on I switched my major from science to Journalism in the middle of my first semester. This spontaneous decision of mine affected my GPA substantially. Around the same time I joined the school track and field team, I participated in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and long jump. As an athlete I practiced everyday for 2-3 hours. In addition to the above stated activity I worked in two part time jobs to support my single mother who was taking care of my elder sister’s 6 months old baby. My sister had been deployed to Iraq. The baby was so young that my mother couldn’t work her usual 2 jobs, thus I had to work to help her financially. Despite of my busy schedule I was active member in 2 of the school clubs on campus and also the school choir. Through the school club I travelled to Rwanda and East Africa to spread the good news of the gospel; to help AIDS victims and their families, also to feed the poor. I also helped in building some churches there.
Later, I also went to China on a study abroad program to continue my studies at one of the Chinese university for four months. I achieved a GPA of 3.8 during my studies over there which clearly indicates that I am good student but unfortunately my school policy does not allow accumulated grades earned from universities outside USA into our GPA. I can claim that since I was involved in umpteen numbers of activities, I still managed to get respectable GPA score. I would kindly request to please accept my application for master’s program. I promise to show my best academic performance.
