Great Success Success is the lofty idea of accomplishing some type of task that can make someone feel extraordinary. Everyone can think back to a time where they experienced some success, whether it is closing a major business deal or as simple as helping someone out. The concept of success morphs from person to person, but most people can agree the dictionary definition misses the true essence, the idea of success evolves as a person does, and true success is related to morals. The definition of success and the average person’s perception of success can be very similar and slightly deceiving.

The Webster’s definition of success is, the attainment of popularity or profit. For some people this applies very well, but there are people that have obtained popularity and wealth that are not successful. An example, a businessman spends all his time and effort working and become’s a workaholic. Sure he or she may make an incredible amount of money, but due to this he or she has missed some type of opportunity. What he or she could have missed out on is limitless which could have hindered the true meaning of success. Another perception in this culture is, money is the equivalent to success.

Once again, in some people’s minds this is true. However, if someone’s main goal in life is money, and to accomplish making money immoral acts are committed, success is bitter sweet. This is almost success, but it lacks the morality of true success. Success, as with anything, changes and evolves through one’s life through maturity and age. Success to a child and success to an adult vary greatly as expected. Accordingly, children do not think of much other then what they can do for fun. Success for a child could simply mean winning a bear at a carnival, or beating friends at a backyard game.

Completing a simple task such as beating the child lock to a cabinet to get some candy is a feeling of greatness for children. As people get older, it gets more complicated. The young adult years still rooting in pure enjoyment, but the concept get slightly more complicated. A young adult or adult would not feel success from opening a cabinet with a child lock to get candy, but he or she would feel it getting a date to the prom or getting a job. The pride a person can feel from a new job or a raise is an excellent example of how adults can feel success.

What does not change with success is meeting a set goal in the mind, and being happy with the fulfillment of this goal brings a smile to one’s face. True success is rooted from the accomplishment of a moral goal or purpose. Another definition from the dictionary that is more accurate which is, “Success is whenever an accomplishment is set and achieved. ” The key word is success needs to be measured. A person needs to have a goal that has an end to it. Progress needs to be able to be tracked and once completed, success is obtained.

An example of success that does not have to do with money is a person directing a food drive. This person probably does not make much money or no money at all. Nevertheless, if his or her goal is to collect two tons of food and the fundraiser reaches that goal, he or she is successful. This success is due to a goal that was set and reached. Also, there was no moral dilemma that could take away from being successful, and the director is satisfied with his or her work. A moral dilemma can take away from success because doing something that is wrong will make true success impure.

If a terrible act is committed in order to reach one’s goal and that goal is reached due to that act, people feel bittersweet. The three concepts of success from the dictionary, from it evolving, and the meaning of true success, all come from meeting a goal and the happiness it brings. No two people are alike, so no two people have the same definition for this abstract idea. Some people say money makes a person successful and others can say a menial task can have the same effect. What people can agree on is it makes a person feel pride and fulfillment.
