By concentrating on the facets of uniformity and the nature of insanity in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and King of Hearts. the careful reader can understand the importance of different peoples perceptual experience of what insanity truly means and how uniformity has more meaningful deepness to it ; this focal point of uniformity and the nature of insanity is utile because it allows a profounder significance when reading similar narratives. In One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and King of Hearts. the construct of uniformity as a type of protection and how it shows individualism stand out in both narratives. In One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Chief is eventually able to get away the insane refuge. When he does so. he catches a drive with a Mexican adult male heading north. Chief wants to acquire as far off as possible from the refuge. “…professional Indian grappler the mob had tried to lock up in a Bedlam that he stopped existent speedy and gave me a leather jacket to cover my greens” ( 324 ) . When head says “greens” . he is mentioning to the green uniforms that the people in the refuge wear to show the thought that they are all the same. that nil distinguishes them from one another.
This green uniform is a manner to do certain that everyone is the indistinguishable and it is besides considered to be a type of protection. Although. in this peculiar scene. the Mexican adult male gives Chief a jacket to “cover” this thought of unvarying that the mental infirmary imposed. When he puts the coat. that is the minute in which Chief eventually becomes an person. Chief has chosen to take off this bed of “protection” and go whomever he decides to be. non what the combine tells him to be. In King of Hearts. the characters are the exact antonym of one another when it comes to uniformity. Everyone from the shortly to be blown up metropolis fled while the insane people from the refuge wandered around and started to have on other people’s vesture. At the terminal of the film though. they suddenly decide to travel back to the refuge. Prior to making so. they take off all the apparels that they antecedently put on baring their uniforms from the refuge. This peculiar scene from the film shows that these madmans prefer have oning a uniform. even though it hides their individualism. For them. it is a manner to experience secure and more at easiness. When they wear regular vesture. it shows that they are ready to be free and manage the universe but this portion of the film proves otherwise.
These people are non ready to suit in with everyone else ; they are non ready to be like everyone else. They feel as though when they wear their uniforms they are all the same. but there is some kind of concealed shield that they prefer. that protects them from the outside universe. They care more about the fact that they are shielded instead than demoing their singularity. Both narratives demonstrate the impression of deriving a type of protection from uniformity and how it establishes one eccentricity. The contention about who is truly insane. the people of the refuge or the “normal” people in the outside universe. is a reoccurring subject in King of Hearts and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. In One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. the storyteller explains to the readers what sort of individual Big Nurse is. He starts adverting that she is a “manipulator” and what he suggests operators do. “There are such people in our society. A operator can act upon the other patients and interrupt them to such an extent that it may take months to acquire everything running smooth one time more” ( 27 ) .
Large nurse has the ability to act upon others and do them believe every bit twisted as she does. She has this arrested development on commanding people. that being held into consideration. Chief references that operators have the power to “disrupt” others to a great extent. Large nurse is really manipulating and viing with “crazy people” . it has gotten to that point. Peoples who are insane can non believe right. Large nurse is conflicting and act uponing these sort of people which shows how shallow she is and how far she is willing to travel to turn out that she is superior. it illustrates that she may really be crazier than the patients. Notice how Chief says that “there are such people in our society” . the bulk of our society is similar to Large nurse in a manner. They want to command and vie with one another ; it is how the human web plants. A considerable sum of our population is insane. they are crazier than those in the refuge. In King of Hearts. the brainsick characters convince the reader that the universe they live in is crazier than they are. The people from the insane refuge have “taken over” the empty metropolis.
These people are normally really obedient and respectful of their alleged King. but when he wants to go forth and them all with him before the bomb explodes. that is when they start to arise. Charles orders them to follow him but they all take bends at saying that the outside universe is crazier than they are. “’Follow me! Follow me! ’ ‘There are wild animals! ’ ‘Can’t you hear them? They’re bloodthirsty. ’ ‘You must come with me. ’ ‘There’s a wall between us and the universe out there’ ‘Its excessively unsafe. ’ ‘Come on. for the last time’ ‘Charles! ’ ‘You have no thought how wicked they are out at that place! ”’ The “wild beasts” that the madmans are mentioning to is clearly mankind. There are some people on this planet that will make monstrous things. Others outside of the refuge call those that are in it brainsick but in world. they might really good be the insane 1s. The brainsick Barber says that they are “bloodthirsty” which is logical in a sense ; the universe is a brainsick and barbarous topographic point. This clip period was centered in the center of World War 2. where people invariably fought and killed each other mindlessly. Peoples who were involved in this war were so these bloody-minded animals.
The duchess so adds on that citizens were “wicked” in the outside universe. that people were barbarous and hardhearted towards one another. To them. it was a known fact that those outside the refuge were merely every bit insane as they were if non worse. The duke says that there is a “wall between [ them ] and the world” and that “its excessively dangerous” which is in fact accurate. There is a hidden wall between the insane and sane people of the universe and it is a hazardous move to travel beyond this wall because that could harm the true nature of insanity. Charles is used to the outside universe and wants these people to come with him but they know what is waiting for them out at that place. they know the about lunacy that goes on. At one point they are convinced that they are non the brainsick 1s. The treatment on who is genuinely sane. the universe or people in the refuge. is demonstrated in both narratives. The facets of uniformity and the nature of insanity in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and King of Hearts. clear up the many perceptual experiences that people may hold.
