Subculture refers to “beliefs. values. behaviour. and material objects shared by a peculiar group of people within a larger society” ( Keena. 2007 ) . Sociologists believe that correctional staffs are prisoners and are considered portion of an “orphan group” together with the inmates ( O’Connor. 2006 ) . Both groups do non go force per unit area groups as they are undistinguished and transient in the society.

There appears to be a construction struggle between the correctional officers and the inmates ( Keena. 2007 ) . Some perceive and believe that the inmates are their enemies. When correctional officer wears his uniform. he normally feels the authorization of the uniform and this leads into maltreatments. Furthermore. regulations against fraternisation are observed purely and which explains the ground why correctional officers are apathetic in their inmates causes ( O’Connor. 2006 ) .

In add-on. there is a subculture where the “use of force is acceptable/necessary ; there is discourtesy for the supervisors and the occasional usage of fraudulence to cover up the wrongdoing” ( Muraskin. n. d. ) . Most frequently. payoffs are taken by rectification officers as wage offs for advantages and benefits in favour of the inmates ( O’Connor. 2006 ) .

In misdemeanor of traditional regulations. some correctional officers find themselves friends to inmates. Consequently. they are forced to render ‘favors’ to them lest they will be considered ‘dishonorable’ ( O’Connor. 2006 ) . Another cause of an unethical behaviour is the consequence of public presentation reappraisals for correctional officers. The success and high evaluation of public presentation reappraisal is dependent on how much a correctional officer can command the inmates. With this in head. inmates may do a ‘show’ that they are detecting good behaviour so that the correctional officer can be to a certain extent indebted to them. The correctional officer would look the other manner and allow minor misdemeanors pass without officially turn toing them ( O’Connor. 2006 ) .
