Project management is essential in fulfilling the requirements of any given project. One must know how to achieve the different goals and objectives of the project effectively and efficiently. Organizational behavior, one of the different aspects of an organization, plays a significant role in implementing these objectives. Different factors concerning the behavior of the people within the organization can have altering effects on the project itself. The positive and negative impacts from the organizational behavior can help in determining the success rate of the project.

The Role of Organizational Behavior in Projects Management

            Project management has different objectives that need to be met in order for the desired project to be properly and successfully carried out. This paper will aim to explore the role of organizational behavior from the perspective of a project manager, and view the different effects of the role on the project itself.

            Project management refers to the process of organizing and planning of a certain event, by a certain number of participants (“Project Management,” 2008). The duties are often divided into parts, referring to the different factors that must be covered in order to make the project a success.

            Organizational behavior is the study of the behavioral patterns of the people within the organization. It is done by analyzing the relationships between the people and the organization, and using the data gathered to further improve this relationship

 (Clark, 2008).

            From a project manager’s stand point, the role of organizational behavior is crucial in performing the project’s objectives. It is the project manager’s responsibility to oversee the people working on the different areas of the project in order to assure the success of the project. The project manager has to ensure that the people within the organization are properly treated so that they would be able to handle their tasks accordingly.

            One of the factors within organizational behavior is the development of the organization. This involves the improvement within the cultural structure of the people for the betterment of the organization as a whole. This development is an imperative for the project to be made a success as the morale of the people affects the way they work. Having a low morale could result in bad performance, which could affect the project significantly.

            Different organizational structures can also have an impact on the organizational behavior. Different hierarchical positions as well as assignments to different positions could be a determining factor on how the people behave and perceive their work. For example, in a traditional organizational structure, the focus of power is based on a traditional custom or belief that is based on previous or currently existing norms (“Organizational Influences,” 2007). In this structure, the people who are below the hierarchical ladder have less freedom to work, as they are subjected to doing whatever work they are assigned to, without being considered for what type of work they are more capable of doing. Another example would be the functional structure, where the people are assigned to different areas of responsibility (“Organizational Influences,” 2007).  In this structure, the project manager has less authority over his workers, while the people are given opportunities to work in the field where they are most suited, which helps in increasing their quality of work. By assigning the people to where they excel, every task is done at a higher level, which would result in a higher rate of success for the project being done. A third example would be the projectized structure, where the workers get the opportunity to work with each other, even though they belong to different departments (“Organizational Influences,” 2007). With this structure, the people are given even more freedom to work, which boosts their overall morale and helps them perform their work better.

            Organizational behavior takes a huge role in project management. It is up to the project manager to keep the behavior of his workers in check, as well as decide which kind of organizational structure is most suited for the project being done. The overall success of the project would be decided by how well everyone in the organization performs.
