Introduction As I was a Christian. my parents use to inquire me to read different types of books about God and faith. One of my favourite books that I had read during my high school old ages was a book by Thomas Aquinas. Thomas Aquinas believed in a alone combination of religion and ground in his believes of God. and had brought up five different statements on his believes in political and ethical in the being of God. 1st: The First Mover Aristotle got the thought that the whole existence is in gesture from Heraclitus. and he wrote it in his Metaphysicss. When Aquinas read this. he was amazed by this thought.
Aquinas argued that everything must be moved by something. “Everything that moves is moved by something else. for nil can travel unless it has the potency of geting the flawlessness of that towards which it moves” ( Aquinas. 1950 ) Aquinas states that there must be a first mover who moves everything since it is impossible for things to be in gesture without being moved. Aquinas so identifies the first mover who is non moved by anyone as God. 2nd: First Cause Aquinas states that there must be an efficient cause for everything in the universe and it is impossible for something to do itself.
“In the universe of senses we find that there is a sequence of efficient causes. but we ne’er find something that causes itself. and it is impossible to make because it would predate itself – which is impossible” ( Aquinas. 1950 ) Aquinas argues that if one can follow back infinitively. it is possible to happen the first cause that causes everything. Aquinas got that thought from Aristotle. who said “efficient cause” is what it cause itself and do everything else. and Aquinas called the first cause God. 3rd: First Being.
Aquinas ponders the theory of being. inquiring why everything exist if at that place used to be nil? Harmonizing to Aquinas. the universe can’t be merely here all the clip. some ‘necessary being’ must hold created it. “Everything can non be [ simply ] possible but there must be some necessary being in being. Something is necessary being either as a consequence of the action of another or not” ( Aquinas. 1950 ) Then Aquinas came up with the decision that God is the first being that created itself and created everything out of nil. and that is why we all exist now.
4th: First perfect thing In Aquinas’s position. there are things that are perfect ; hence. there must be perfect signifiers in the existence. “The 4th manner is based on the steps that exist in things. We find in the universe that some things are more or less true. or good. or baronial and so on” ( Aquinas. 1950 ) Something can be closer to ideal than the others. so Aquinas argues that a perfect being must be. Aquinas so concludes that it is God is the being that is all good and incorporate “whatever flawlessness everything has.
” ( Aquinas. 1950 ) 5th: Everything follows an order Through detecting the nature and acquisition from other philosophers. Aquinas agrees that there is an order in the existence. Everything tends to follow the thought of teleology. which is to hold a map and intent. “We see that things that lack consciousness such as organic structures in nature map purposively” ( Aquinas. 1950 ) Since there is order in the existence that even unconscious things follow. Aquinas thinks there must be person who designs it. and the being is God.
In Aquinas position. God is the intelligent being that direct everything to its ends. Decision I am convinced. but still disbelieving on his statements. It is really difficult to straight deny Aquinas’s cogent evidence because they are so strong. Aquinas thought of God is the first mover. first cause and first being is difficult to refute. With the engineerings we have in modern societies. we still can non happen out what causes the first motion. what is the efficient cause of everything else. or what is the first thing that existed.
Aquinas is right that it is impossible to make things out of nil. and the large knock theory we have presents is non 100 % proven to be accurate. But possibly one twenty-four hours in the far future our engineering may be good plenty to confute Aquinas statements. Although his points to turn out God’s being are strong. I still come up with a couple inquiries that assemble the theodicy job. If God exist. why would at that place be evil? Why doesn’t God merely make a perfect universe which there is no agony? Aquinas tries to reply the with really cliche Christian positions that do non fulfill me.
He claims that God is proving our religion and God gives us free-will because we are intelligent. If God is powerful and all-knowing. why doesn’t he merely make human existences that are faithful and non iniquitous? There is no point to prove our religion if God knows we have faith or non. The theodicy job is an eternal treatment and I believe neither Aquinas nor any individual in the current universe can to the full explicate this. Bibliography Aquinas. T. ( 1950 ) .
