In Health, I got introduced very well and we said our name and said something that we like or our favourite hobbies or spots of whatever. And it kind of gave me an idea of what kind of people they are, so I knew what I was getting into in that class, like who I was with.

The teachers gave me loads of resources that I could look over and study for all of my exams and it really helped because I got good exam marks

Academic assistance from teachers

It was probably that everyone had earned credits the year before but I had earned none because my school didn’t do that. So I was a little bit worried about…maybe catching up with some of the work. They were just doing revision for exams. I knew most of the work – or pretty much all of it – but I still didn’t know a lot, so that was a bit hard.

A

Maybe gave me a little bit more time to settle in before I– I had to get straight into– follow the classwork, so maybe a little bit more time to settle in or introduced a bit better

1. Helpful introduction to new school

I

Like the first day I got here, I had to go straight into assignments and stuff and I didn’t really get a chance to catch up at all in some of the classes

…after a couple of weeks when I knew everyone relatively well, and I could just speak whatever was on my mind and laugh about anything and I was just myself at school.

I just felt accepted. At my old school it going a bit downhill, so coming here was bit of a change, but I felt acceptance and happy.

I actually learnt a lot while I was here. I was only here for a term, but I still learnt way more than I did that three terms at a different school.

the teachers understanding that I might not know everything, was a help. If I didn’t know very much then they would extend my thing, so it made me feel a bit better about it. I wasn’t as stressed. That made my transition a bit easier because I didn’t have to be stressed… explaining things one-on-one and stuff.

They were really, really nice to me and helped me if I had anything bad. So, I’ve learned new skills that I wouldn’t have if it weren’t for them

I don’t know chuckles. Like hanging out after school and stuff? That can help, yeah. That’s an example as well, yeah. I guess that really helped me. That helped me to get to know them a bit better. We just did stuff from day one, so I

1. Student openness & acceptance

Kind. Inviting. Kind of comforting, if that makes sense. If something was wrong then everyone would be very supportive of you in whatever they could. They just support you and stuff.

My best friends. Some of them even started this year, but they’ve helped so much. I definitely enjoy their company.

Probably not earning enough credits, like fast enough. They’ve already got 30 credits, but I only– maybe even more than that now. They probably have around 60 or over 40, but I only have so many. It’s been half a year and we haven’t done that much, so how many credits am I actually going to earn in that last two terms?

1. NCEA credit concerns

Probably getting an excellence or a merit endorsement. All I can see is that I’m always trying to get to that goal. Probably a level endorsement. I’m always striving for excellence, but if I were to get merit, that’s still really good.

I guess just becoming closer with them. Getting to know them more. I know them quite well, but we don’t talk about everything to each other. So, I guess getting past that point where you feel like, “Then what?” The way you’d worry that they might tell something. Just getting passed that.

Definitely. I trust my English teacher, she’s so cool. She is like my friend laughter.

1. Trusting adults

You don’t really feel judged. Like when you’re walking around, you don’t really feel judged at all. If that answers your question.

They just look fit and they’d probably always have sport shoes in their hand or whatever. And very pretty. The girls are always really pretty and they’ve got everything perfect. They’re kind of a little bit exclusive. You wouldn’t necessarily think of joining their group if you weren’t in it already. When they’re with their group they’re kind of exclusive, but when you get them one-on-one, they’re very nice. They’re not mean people at all. A lot of them are in my class and I’m quite good friends with them

But I enjoy seeing my friends every day and a lot of the classes I actually quite enjoy.

1. Difficulty making friends & entering extant groups

You can kind of tell what a group is. There’s the popular group, the sporty group, there’s the geeky group – they’re always sitting with their computers. But I’m just in a very mainstream group that everyone’s just average. I don’t know chuckles. We’re just normal. Yeah. There’s definitely the popular sporties and then there’s just the sporty group who are just– they just hang out on the courts, so they’re just

Definitely. The teachers here, they can teach you so much more than the teachers there. And I have learnt more in the four terms that I’ve been here than probably two years of the last school. I think these teachers here pay more attention to you. They actually make sure that you are learning stuff and if you are talking– they allow a bit of talking, but at the end of the day you need to keep your head down and working. And they make sure that you do. But at my last school it was, if someone is mucking around in the class then they kind of focus on them and keeping them quiet so everyone else is just not doing the work and they don’t really check it as often.

When I first started feeling like I actually really felt like I belonged here and we were just all laughing, and I got along with everyone really well. And I knew that I didn’t have to worry about anything really any more. I just felt very open and free chuckles. They were the only group that I had when I first came so I hadn’t really made friends in other classes enough to where I would hang out with them. So, if I didn’t get along with that group very well then I’d have to work very hard to get to someone else’s group.

The math in my last school…the problem was I never learnt anything new. Everything throughout the entire year was old so I ended up pretty much doing no work, sometimes playing in class…because I knew all the stuff by the time it got to term 2 or 3 exams…After we had already marked them and that and I got the results and I got the best results in the class.

Most of the kids were inviting and ok of me being in…I just you know wasn’t hanging…
